SP Energy Networks (SPEN) plays a vital role in ensuring we keep up with the evolving way our customers and communities generate, consume, and interact with energy through the provision of services that are crucial to the delivery of the Government’s ambitious Net Zero and Low Carbon targets.
To support the transition to Net Zero we are deploying innovative solutions such as Flexibility Services, working with customers to turn up or turn down their demand to help manage our electrical networks. As our Lead Energy Systems Specialist, it will be your responsibility to engage with market participants and ensure they respond to market signals.
To make the maximise the potential benefits of Flexibility from our providers you will also need to make sure flexibility is available when and where it is required, is both economic and efficient and ensure transparency and licence compliance.
What you’ll be doing
Developing Flexibility Services
This is a new and developing area for SPEN, you will be part of a multi-functional team managing the verification of dispatch and settlement of flexibility services. Last year we tendered for over 1,500 locations across our networks seeking more than 1.4GW of response. You will also be responsible for the creation of new market opportunities for SPEN and Flexibility Providers, undertaking trials and establishing new service requirements.
Improving our Engagement with Flexibility Providers
Establish and manage commercial partnerships with Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs) to ensure that the effectiveness and availability of contracted assets are operational to support the network in time for the contracted service window.
Lead post tender processes
Develop an extensive and positive relationship with the SPD and SPM control rooms to ensure common knowledge of available flexibility contracts, use cases and upcoming flexibility requirements, enabling future tendering. Communicate SPENs utilisation forecasts to internal and external stakeholders. Including owning internal/external communication of dispatch principles, primacy rules, CBAs, and our decision-making framework.
Flexibility Services Platform Provision
Responsible for the development of SPENs Flexibility Platform provision, including interactions with existing systems, and for facilitating onboarding of FSPs to key flexibility and corporate platforms including SAP.
What you’ll bring
Advanced knowledge and experience of contract management and administration from negotiation to delivery, with a strong knowledge of GB electricity network operation and risks.
Experience of engaging with stakeholders and/or Ofgem in a regulated environment
A track record of delivery, ideally in a relevant area of activity
An understanding of effective partnership working with other utilities and organisations
High level business planning, financial awareness and strategic thinking;
Effective at leading and managing change in a complex environment and creating a culture of engagement and positivity
Excellent written and oral communication, and persuasive skills;
High degree of emotional intelligence and commercial awareness.
High level analytical skills and advanced mathematical abilities.
Ability to prioritise and manage a very diverse & demanding workload;
