JOB SUMMARY: This position is located in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, in the Office of the Superintendent. The purpose of this position manages the day to-day operation of the park including maintenance, resources management, visitor and resource protection, fees, interpretation, education, volunteers, administration, business services, partnerships, and safety. MAJOR DUTIES: The major duties of the Park Manager (Deputy Superintendent) position include, but are not limited to, the following: Serves as the key official responsible for directing and supervising the activities of the park staff related to internal operations. Directly supervises 5 - GS-13 and 1 - GS-14 division chiefs; indirectly manages a work force of over 80 FTE's. Addresses critical management problems and issues, determining objectives to solve concerns, and developing and directing long range operational planning efforts. Assists with the normal mission and support functions associated with a park of this size and complexity, including natural and cultural resource management and protection; wilderness management and protection; law enforcement and investigations, dispatch, structural fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical services, concessions operations, fees, and special park uses; interpretation, special events and related visitor services; construction and maintenance; and contracting, procurement, property management, personnel management, and budget and financial management. Participates in community meetings and designated community organizations as the representative of the park and superintendent.
