Bay West is seeking an Environmental Engineer Intern to work on projects related to the evaluation and remediation of a contaminated sites. The primary project assigned to this individual is operation and maintenance of a contaminated groundwater pump and treat system located on the University of Minnesota West Bank. Assignments will include working as an individual and as part of a project team to assist with tasks and projects. Additional projects are available to work on depending on applicants’ availability.
*Must be currently enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota.
POSITION SUMMARY
Title – Environmental Engineer Intern
Location – Saint Paul, MN
Pay Range and Basis of Pay – $19.00 - $21.99
HOW THIS POSITION SUPPORTS BAY WEST CLIENTS
- Conduct bi-weekly site inspections of the project Site. Inspections include recording system operational data, flow and pressure readings, visual observations, H2S readings, and other observations as needed.
- Collect groundwater samples as required from various sampling locations throughout the project Site. Submit the samples to a local laboratory.
- Submit written field notes and photos electronically to the Bay West project manager.
- Be available by phone and able to respond to system alarm conditions as requested.
- Obtain 24- or 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
- Approximately 10-20 hours per month. More available depending on applicants’ availability.
- Depending on availability and skills, other project needs could include:
- Assist with the Household Hazardous Waste and BioWatch programs along with additional support for Emergency Response and other various activities out of our St. Paul location.
- Provide general labor, technical and field support on various environmental site assessments; onsite investigations of contaminated soil, sediment, and groundwater; construction observation; and preparation of technical reports.
- Oversee the proper excavation of contaminated soil during remediation and construction projects.
- Available once every eight weeks to assist in Emergency Response (ER) clean-up activities for hazardous and non-hazardous material, loading, unloading, and decontaminating ER equipment in an efficient and accurate manner.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers, both orally and in writing, in a courteous and professional manner of observed or perceived health, safety or other work environment conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION
- Working towards four-year B.S. degree in Civil, Chemical, Industrial, Mechanical Engineering, or related program graduating May 2025 or December 2025.
- Possess proficient personal computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills – both written and verbal.
- Superb problem-solving skills, time-management, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Candidates who have already obtained a 24- or 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification are preferred.
- Per contractual agreement between Bay West LLC and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, applicant is required to:
- Currently be enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota.
- Be available to respond to emergency calls within one hour of notification.
