The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking a summer Intern to provide assistance in the areas of planning, research, and data analysis for land-use, housing, and/or bicycle/pedestrian projects. This internship will provide valuable experience in planning for livability and multimodal transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Ideal candidates should live within the Dallas-Fort Worth region and be able to work at least 25 hours a week from approximately mid-May to mid-August 2024. Continuing employment opportunities may be available for Interns who are successful in this position.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with the collection, processing, and analysis of land-use, transportation, and demographic data
  • Entering data and maintaining spreadsheets, files, and other information systems
  • Assisting with the creation and editing of maps, and processing of spatial and tabular data using Geographic Information Systems (ESRI ArcGIS Pro)
  • Compiling and summarizing studies and writing reports   
  • Preparing, for supervisor review, presentation slides, public outreach content, and education materials
  • Performing quality control on completed work
  • Completing checklists and compiling documentation

Required Skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (ESRI ArcGIS Pro)
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with other team members, and present ideas
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Strong analytical skills, with ability to identify data discrepancies
  • Ability to assess historical actions, interpret communications, compile documentation, and summarize findings

Required Education and Experience

  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment
  • No work experience required

Starting Salary

Minimum of $16.00 per hour

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by, and for local governments, and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOG's purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and to help them recognize regional opportunities, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and make joint decisions. Since 1974, NCTCOG has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
