The Department of Environmental Sciences (DES) at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Extension Specialist in Climate Change Resiliency. A faculty member is sought who performs research and extension outreach related to climate and weather, climate change and climate change impacts, adaptation, and resiliency. Areas of interest are climatic effects on urban infrastructure and environmental justice communities, agriculture, and coastal challenges, and related topics relevant to New Jersey. The successful expected to (1) develop an innovative, externally-funded, and nationally recognized extension and research program as part of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES) and the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS), (2) engage in robust community outreach with diverse stakeholders from urban to suburban to agricultural clientele, with an emphasis on equitable solutions to climate change, through the NJAES system, (3) serve as the Assistant NJ State Climatologist, (4) teach courses in the undergraduate Meteorology and graduate Atmospheric Science academic programs in the Department of Environmental Sciences, (5) supervise student weather observers and (6) perform service to the department, NJAES, SEBS, university and state. Preferred candidates will have a B.S. in a science or engineering discipline and a Ph.D. in atmospheric or climate science; or related science/engineering disciplines, and have demonstrated the ability to conduct research, engage in grantsmanship, perform outreach, teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to mentor students.

The Department of Environmental Sciences (DES) is the oldest environmental sciences department in the nation, with a history dating back over 100 years. In addition to its programs in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, DES offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Environmental Science and a joint Environmental Engineering program with the School of Engineering.

The facilities of the DES include high performance computing systems and an array of state-of-the-art laboratory and field instrumentation. The Rutgers Photochemical Assessment Monitoring (PAM) Site supports continuous, real-time measurements for meteorological and air quality applications, and DES enjoys a strong working relationship with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. DES also has a strong presence in Extension through faculty involvement in the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station that is part of the University’s Land-Grant mission.
