We have been electrifying industries, powering homes and transforming life through innovation and collaboration for more than 100 years. Empowered by our goal, we are determined to enable fossil free living within one generation. To succeed we, as one of Europe's leading energy companies, must be fossil-free ourselves.
But that’s not enough. That’s why we are looking beyond our own industry, to see where we can really make a difference.
Join us in our journey towards a fossil-free life within one generation.

About the thesis
Within BA Wind’s BU Onshore, the Wind Resource team is part of the Market and Site Development department and amongst others responsible for delivering wind data for various objectives, having a thorough understanding of the wind flow, and designing the layout of the wind farm. In short, we are responsible for maximizing the output of the future wind farms of Vattenfall, while keeping the permit and the financials in mind.
The production calculations for a wind project in development, is normally presented as a yearly production averaged over the project lifetime, so called AEP (annual energy production). To attain the AEP, all losses such as wake effects, availability, electrical efficiency, turbine performance, environmental and curtailment losses need to be subtracted.
The requests for 8760 hourly time series, with a production estimate for each hour of a typical year instead of yearly average, are increasing. This is especially challenging when it comes to defining all losses on an hourly time scale. One example being ice losses that typically occur during the winter season.
Thesis goal/purpose
The Wind Resource team would highly benefit from a simple tool to create an 8760 hourly time series based on relevant input data. The exact method can be discussed together with the supervisor who is going to be someone from the WR Onshore team and who will guide the Student through the studies and adventures in Vattenfall.
