A large defence capital works programme which, over 15 years, will contribute to the upgrade of the UK’s strategic defence capability.

As the senior sustainability manager, you will lead a team of specialists to meet programme environmental and sustainability goals. You will lead strategic initiatives, and your team to drive sustainability, protect the environment and ensure a lasting impact on environmental stewardship. As a vital member of the EHSQ function, you’ll lead on environmental goals outlined by various programmes, e.g. conducting technical reviews of environmental data, identifying, and implementing legal frameworks within a multifunctional project framework, and reviewing technical environmental deliverables e.g., BAT assessments.
Due to strict security pre-requisites, candidates must be UK nationals and must obtain the security clearances appropriate for their role.
The successful candidate will join the existing responsible business team in the UK and deliver client-facing consultancy services including the advisory, management and co-ordination of various climate change, sustainability and/or social value related activities on projects and/or programmes. The role will also support work winning, and Mace’s wider corporate ambitions to reduce client carbon emissions by 10 million tonnes, generate £700m value to society, and deliver 500 hectares of new biodiversity net gain by 2026.
You’ll be responsible for:

Leading the development of client climate change, sustainability and/or social value strategies on individual projects, including agreeing project outcomes and ensuring their delivery by the project team.

Managing a team of sustainability managers and/or assistant sustainability managers.

Be a technical expert and promote innovation in a particular area of sustainability, such as waste, energy/carbon, water, responsible sourcing of materials, sustainable buildings, etc.

At the same time, this person should be a pro-active generalist, able to cover all key issues of sustainability with all relevant stakeholders.

Supporting the work winning through bid support, innovation, client liaison, upskilling of colleagues and external profile-raising of Mace/Mace services.

Supporting the drive for Mace to be a leader in climate change and sustainability.

Translating technical topics into laypersons language and articulate the value of sustainability.

Representing Mace at relevant forums and through presentations to clients and working groups.

Championing sustainability and be a leader, encouraging behavioural change throughout the business.

Developing innovation and best practice, including clearly communicating these to the wider business and our clients.

Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with client and stakeholders including design team members, contractors, subcontractors and regulators.
You’ll also have:

Excellent knowledge of sustainable building design, including embodied and operational carbon and energy reduction, in new build and refurbishment projects, including programme, cost and operational impacts of Net Zero Carbon strategies.

Proven history of driving design teams to understand and respond to environmental constraints and opportunities to maximise positive environmental benefits.

Expertise in one or more sustainability topics (waste, water, energy, carbon, responsible sourcing, building design, biodiversity, etc).

As such, they must be able to translate best EMS practices from one area to another. This includes analysing reporting needs to simplify the process.

Practical experience in the following sectors would be beneficial\: Infrastructure (e.g., rail, highways, aviation, defence, energy, utilities, nuclear)

Experience in project, contractor, stakeholder engagement or delivering employment and skills requirements.

Experience in developing, and/or implementing environmental management systems on projects.

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Solid administration and IT skills - advanced Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Strong interpersonal skills with a flexible approach to different work environments.
