Job Description:
Maryland Environmental Service (MES) has an opening in the Environmental Management System (EMS) and Remediation Section for one of the following, a full time Environmental Specialist Trainee (EST), Environmental Specialist (ES), or Senior Environmental Specialist (SES) at the Dundalk Marine Terminal facility in Baltimore, Maryland. Classification offered is commensurate with experience. The primary responsibilities for the Environmental Specialist classifications include field work (daily waste inspections, water quality sampling, monitoring, inspections and maintenance of stormwater management structures, and invasive control), writing and formatting technical reports, procurements, data review and compilation, permit and regulatory support, maintenance of GIS mapping and technical files, and other support tasks as required.
The chosen candidate must have the ability to lift 50lbs and the ability to work in extreme heat, extreme cold, and inclement weather. Must be able to pass a background check to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) badge and be able to pass a HAZMAT physical exam.
EST: Under direction of a supervisor, assists with collection, compilation, and review of data for compliance of environmental operations, construction and monitoring activities. Assists with the preparation of technical documents, reports and plans. Provides entry-level scientific, technical, and planning support.
ES: Assists with collection, compilation, and review of data for compliance of environmental operations, construction and monitoring activities. Assists with the preparation of technical documents. Provides scientific and technical support. Assists with reviewing and compiling comments on reports and data submitted by subcontractors. Assists with environmental documentation and permitting technical services. Provides procurement support.
SES: Assists with compilation and review of data for compliance of environmental operations, construction and monitoring activities. Assists in the development of proposals, scopes of work and cost estimates and management of some procurements. Prepares and reviews technical documents and permitting documentation. Assists in the coordination and planning of project tasks. Provides scientific, technical, and planning support. May coordinate with one or all the following, clients, contractors, vendors and regulatory officials. Provides meeting coordination, presentation development, and facilitation. May supervise technical staff.
Estimated Pay Range:
EST: $41,818.89 - $44,000
ES: $46,001.76 - $50,000
SES: $50,601.10 - $60,000

Minimum Requirements:
ES Trainee: a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, ecology, biology, chemistry, geology or a related field from an accredited college or university, no prior experience required.
ES: in addition to the education experience listed above, a minimum of one year of experience in environmental science, regulations, engineering, or management.
SES: in addition to the education experience listed above, a minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental science, regulations, engineering, or management. One year of experience must have included responsibility managing environmental projects and providing leadership to other professional and technical staff.
An applicable advanced education degree may be substituted for up to two years of experience.
All positions require possession of a valid driver’s license with less than 5 points.
Preferred but not required skills: Fluent in MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and knowledge of waste inspections, water quality sampling, permits, and chains of custody. Experience in invasive control including herbicide spraying. Experience using ArcMap to compile geographic data and field analysis into existing GIS files.
