POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Director of Sustainability and Transportation (Director), the Sustainability and Transportation Coordinator (Coordinator) is responsible for assisting with all aspects of sustainability, the Stevens Shuttle, transportation demand management (TDM), and parking at Stevens.
The Coordinator assists the University’s sustainability efforts, including Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) reporting. They contribute to campus-wide sustainability initiatives intended to reduce the University’s carbon footprint and impact on the environment. The Coordinator assists in the management of the day-to-day operations of the Stevens Shuttle service. They contribute to all aspects of the University’s TDM programs intended to reduce single occupancy vehicle usage by students and employees. The Coordinator assists in the day-to-day operations of parking at Stevens. As the position develops over time, the Coordinator will have the opportunity to take increasing levels of independent ownership over these responsibilities.
PRINICIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as a campus role model on sustainability and transportation issues by leading by example. Works on the University’s STARS reporting efforts by collaborating with the Director, the University’s sustainability consultant, and campus stakeholders, pursuing and compiling answers to credits, and ensuring the University maintains or improves its Gold rating. Contributes to initiatives at Stevens intended to make the University a leader in sustainability. Consults with the Director and colleagues in the Division of Facilities & Campus Operations about ways to ensure sustainability is at the forefront of all construction projects. Assists the Director in managing the Stevens Shuttle service by working with the vendor to ensure a safe, efficient, and effective program. Assists the Director in managing Luum, the University’s parking management system, issuing parking permits and providing commute incentives. Works on the development and operation of TDM programs that decrease the use of single-occupancy vehicles by students and employees, while increasing the use of transit, bicycles, and similar modes of transportation. Helps the Director plan and develop program criteria to ensure TDM strategies are meeting program objectives. Identifies and recommends improvements to the University’s transportation ecosystem. Compiles, analyzes, and visualizes sustainability and transportation data. Works with the Director and consultant to complete two parking utilization counts each school year and an annual parking and TDM report that is submitted to the City of Hoboken to comply with the ordinance governing the University District zoning change. Serves as the campus liaison for campus events involving the Stevens Shuttle, NJ TRANSIT, Hudson County Improvement Authority, and other partners. Works with the Director to maintain the internal and external Stevens web pages that pertain to sustainability, transportation, and parking. Works with the Director on social media posts that advance sustainability and transportation goals. Serves as an alternate member of the University’s Risk and Safety Committee. Monitors sustainability and transportation industry memberships. Identifies and pursues sustainability and transportation industry recognitions. Assists with Private Business Use reporting as it pertains to parking. Works to improve and increase Bike Index membership and associated bicycle and scooter registrations. Assists the Director in the management of the NJ TRANSIT student pass program and works with IT to ensure the smooth operation of the program. Contributes sustainability and transportation information to the Facilities Emergency Risk Management Plan. Handles tasks tangential to sustainability and transportation, as directed.
REQUIREMENTS
- Undergraduate degree in urban planning, sustainability, environmental sciences, or a related field.
- Openness to obtaining a graduate degree in sustainability management at Stevens.
- This is a true entry-level position. No work experience is required.
- Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and reducing the prevalence of single-occupancy vehicle usage.
- Experience with or willingness to learn website design.
- Experience with or willingness to learn graphic design.
- Experience with or willingness to learn data visualization tools.
- Experience with Microsoft Office programs.
- Effective written and verbal communications.
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
- Ability to think creatively to find solutions despite various constraints.
- Ability to work independently and to thoroughly explore and expand an assignment with little external direction or prompting.
