About the Position
MI’s Environmental & Social Innovation team is looking for an energetic, experienced professional with excellent operations management and research, writing, and presentation skills to join our team as a director. Through comprehensive due diligence and deep engagement with experts, we help philanthropists, family offices, wealth advisors, corporations and foundations take a more entrepreneurial, data-driven approach to giving. We also design and operate innovation forums and complex operational programs and create published reports.
We are looking to hire a director to manage our projects that range from gun violence prevention to economic mobility to AI ethics. The director will be responsible for guiding rigorous research and writing, working closely with the Senior director on operations management, working with C-Suite level leaders across sectors, facilitating expert workshops, providing thought leadership, and creating programmatic initiatives in social innovation. We are looking for a candidate who can bring significant relevant professional connections. Experience with innovation competitions, prizes, tech for good programming, and/or operational management is a strong plus.
Responsibilities
- Lead due diligence efforts for various projects in our portfolio which could include but are not limited to catalyzing entrepreneurial activity and creating expert recommendations for poverty alleviation, violence prevention, strengthening democratic institutions, human equity, and ethics in emerging technologies;
- Be responsible for stakeholder management and team management for assigned projects;
- Develop executive-level literature to communicate findings for philanthropists, researchers, policymakers, people with lived experience, advisors, etc.;
- Manage diverse, ambitious, and collaborative project teams;
- Coordinate research activities across projects which could include facilitating team meetings, evaluating research milestone completion, and troubleshooting delays or setbacks;
- Represent the Milken Institute externally throughout the due diligence process and at various industry-specific events;
- Contribute to communications efforts to build awareness of key funding opportunities, philanthropy resources, and overall opportunities to engage with Milken Institute Philanthropy among the philanthropic, investor, and nonprofit communities; and,
- Contribute to the expansion of social impact toolkits and roadmaps to include investment decision-making tools and case studies of innovative philanthropy strategies and giving vehicles for social innovation.
Requirements
- 15+ years of relevant work experience
- Minimum 3 years management experience with multiple direct reports
- Graduate degree in a relevant field
- Demonstrated excellence in research, writing, facilitating, and presenting
- High intellectual capacity that can be and has been applied to learning new areas of social innovation and related fields
- Strong ability to work on a fast-paced collaborative team, as well as being independently proactive
- Understanding of the funding landscape around the world for violence intervention and wealth generation, especially philanthropic funding for historically disadvantaged communities
- Personal attitude that includes being entrepreneurial, action-oriented, collaborative, flexible, with a willingness to adapt to changing situations and have a good sense of humor
Working Conditions & Travel Requirements
This position will work in a Additionally, this position requires interacting virtually on a regular basis with Milken Institute staff based in other locations in the United States and around the world.

This position will be working a hybrid model, where you will be expected to report to your respective office location 3-days per week (Tuesday - Thursday), this is subject to change.
