Job Summary
This position will work with both the Kenaitze Environmental Program as well as the Cultural Resources Program, spending approximately 50% of their time with each. Interns will work on a variety of environmental projects, especially those focused on local water quality, invasive species and climate change-related issues, and will be involved in a number of subsistence harvesting and Dena'ina cultural knowledge opportunities. Internship Program placements offer an educational experience, opportunities to build on job skills, career readiness, and gain exposure to the Kenaitze Indian Tribe's services and operational processes.
Essential Functions
- Works with Environmental and Cultural Resource staff to assist in day-to-day activities of the departments
- Participates in weekly meetings and contributes to task planning for the week
- Learns about Dena'ina culture and history
- Partakes in local water quality monitoring efforts and beach clean-ups and supports the Tribe's campus-wide recycling program
- Assists in harvest and preservation of plants and fish
- Learns about invasive species identification and participates in planned plant eradication activities
- Helps out at educational events designed to promote community outreach and keep the public informed of Kenaitze's environmental and cultural programming and efforts (will on 2-3 occasions involve weekend hours to be discussed in advance)
- Participates in archaeological projects
- Assists with cultural presentations
- Ability to work flexible hours, not to exceed 40 hours per week
- Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications
Education
- Currently enrolled in High School, or hold a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
Experience
Preferred
- Between the ages of 16-24
- Understanding of, and appreciation for the Kenaitze Dena'ina culture, history and traditions
- Ability to work flexible hours, not to exceed 40 hours per week
- Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
Special Skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrate ability to manage multiple goals, projects and deadlines
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
