Job Summary
Th Animal Care Groundskeeper and Enrichment Specialist is responsible for maintaining the grounds within the zoo's animal exhibit areas, ensuring they are safe, aesthetically pleasing, and conducive to the well-being of both animals and visitors. This role involves regular maintenance tasks such as mowing, weed eating, and trimming, as well as the opportunity to contribute to the enrichment of zoo animals through the construction of various projects.

Essential Functions
- Perform regular mowing of grassy areas within animal exhibit spaces.
- Conduct weed control and removal to maintain a tidy and safe environment.
- Trim vegetation in moats and exhibit areas to ensure clear visibility and accessibility for both animals and visitors.
- Monitor and address any hazards or potential risks on the grounds promptly.
- Collaborate with animal care staff to design and construct enrichment projects for zoo animals.
- Utilize creativity and innovation to develop engaging and stimulating enrichment activities that cater to the natural behaviors and instincts of various animal species.
- Ensure that enrichment projects are safe, durable, and enriching for animals while adhering to zoo guidelines and standards.
- Regularly assess the effectiveness of enrichment activities and make adjustments as needed to enhance animal welfare and enrichment experiences.
- Maintain and operate groundskeeping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, and other tools, ensuring they are in good working condition.
- Perform routine inspections and minor repairs on equipment as necessary.
- Follow proper safety protocols and procedures when operating equipment and handling maintenance tasks.
- Coordinate closely with animal care staff to understand the unique needs and preferences of zoo animals.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues to prioritize tasks and ensure seamless execution of groundskeeping and enrichment activities.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions to stay informed about zoo policies, procedures, and initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities
No supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
Must be able to tolerate and be exposed to strong odors, toxic or caustic chemicals, dust, hay, animal fur/hair/dander, and wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and all variable outdoor weather conditions.
Physical Demands
Must be able to climb ladders/stairs, lift crates/animals and / or equipment weighing 70 lbs., operate mowers, handle fires hoses, operate weed eaters, hay elevators, motorized carts, tractors, dump truck, pickup truck, load and operate wheelbarrows loaded up to 150 lbs., be agile and flexible to maneuver in and around the animals within exhibits, corrals and holding areas.
Travel
No travel necessary.
Required Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Ability to operate groundskeeping equipment safely and efficiently.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or related field preferred.
- Knowledge of basic horticulture principles and practices.
Additional Qualifications
- Maintain a current tetanus vaccination (5 years) and be willing to be TB tested annually.
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays and evenings as required.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a pre-employment background check.
- Covid-19 and Flu Vaccines encouraged; must following masking protocols as determined by organization.
