General Statement of Job
The Toledo Zoo is looking for an Intern this summer that will support the Toledo Zoo’s safety initiatives. In this role, you will be performing duties associated with employee and facility safety compliance to ensure the welfare of employees, guests, contractors, and vendors. This is a great opportunity that allows you to build your resume and gain exposure to the development and implementation elements of the Zoo’s overall safety and/or environmental management systems! This position reports to the Environmental Health & Safety Manager and is a non-exempt part-time position under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Candidates and expect to work a minimum of 24 hours per week, with the possibility of working up to 40 as needed. Must have flexibility in work scheduling to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
Essential Job Functions *Duties will include, but are not limited to the following*
- Adheres to and promotes the Toledo Zoo’s mission, core values, and strategic safety initiatives. Interacts with all level of employees to ensure the safety of the organization..
- Participates in department safety inspections to ensure safety compliance of employees and code compliance for the Zoo meeting federal, state, and local regulations
- Performs inspections for eye wash stations, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits throughout the campus. Participates in pre-planning meetings, safety training, and orientations.
- Responds to Safety service ticket requests to meet department needs. Responds to first-aid calls for visitors and employees and manages first-aid stations.
- Assists with evaluating trends, root cause analysis, the development/implementation of basic safety/ergonomics/environmental programs, department safety meetings, and compliance activities.
- Assists with evaluating and investigating safety concerns and communication concerning guest and employee injuries.
- Assists with employee training for all the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, including but not limited to Blood-Borne Pathogen, Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Fall Protection, Personal Protection Equipment, Respirator Training, and Hazard Communication. Consideration of other federal, state, or city requirements is necessary, and maintain training records.
- Contributes to annual fire inspections and all annual safety-related inspections, including but not limited to fire extinguisher inspections, fire hydrant inspections, fire hood inspections, and fire drop-door inspections.
- Assists with safety audits and risk assessments to ensure safe housekeeping standards and a safe work environment for employees. Assists with annual hazardous waste and battery disposal.
- Performs computer, clerical and administrative duties while maintaining an organized workflow.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be an undergraduate student attending an accredited college or university within the United States that is pursuing a degree in an Occupational Health and Safety Program or an approved related field.
- Must have completed two years of study, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must have a valid drivers’ license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
