SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Director of Membership, the Membership Engagement Coordinator promotes the Zoo’s membership program and serves the Zoo’s members through planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of Zoo members’ experience especially with regard to sales and benefits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following:
Membership Duties
- Provides day-to-day administrative support to the department.
- Collaborates with the Director of Membership and the Membership Team to design, develop, revise, coordinate, implement, and evaluate all aspects of the membership program – especially as they relate to sales and benefits in accordance with the Membership Department Plan.
- Collaborates with the Guest Services Department Manager and Leads regarding membership sales on Zoo grounds as well as online.
- Oversees consistency of membership sales, including training, scripts, and written communications.
- Oversees all aspects of the gift membership program, researching and implementing opportunities to advance gift sales.
- Handles various administrative projects, including phone, email, and in-person correspondence with guests, colleagues, and community partners, ensuring all communications reflect the Zoo brand accurately.
- Supports Director of Membership with communications and benefit fulfillment for Circle of Care level memberships; work at events and collaborates with Advancement Department as needed.
- Coordinates the Zoo’s reciprocal program.
- Coordinates Member events, including creation, planning, sponsorship, and logistics.
- Coordinates Member Appreciation Month activities, including creation, planning, soliciting community partners, and logistics.
- Collaborates with the Director of Membership on the creation, development, and implementation of member promotions.
- Collaborates with Marketing Department to update membership sales, promotion through relevant media channels.
- Collaborates with Events Team as necessary.
- Facilitates in-house membership needs, including employee, volunteer, Golden, etc.
- Presents at PEP, Mamatoto, and other related community groups as appropriate.
- Stays current and knowledgeable on AZA, the Santa Barbara Zoo’s mission, collection, history, programs, projects, and practices
- Contributes to Membership Department annual planning and budgeting process
- Attends local Membership Roundtables and other professional development opportunities as warranted.
- Develops and maintains Member sales manuals, collaborating with Guest Services for on-site and phone.
- Orders and tracks usage of standard Membership supplies.
- Supports Director of Membership with other projects as assigned.
- Adheres to the Zoo’s policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Policy Manual.

SECONDARY DUTIES:
- Assists with other Membership Department functions as necessary.
- Participates in special team assignments as appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Guest Relations
- Greets every guest with a smile.
- Thanks guests for supporting/visiting the Zoo.
- Answers phone calls, voice mails, and e-mails promptly and professionally.
- Ensures the Zoo’s presentation standards for cleanliness and maintenance are met by keeping work areas clean, picking up trash, reporting unsafe or unsightly conditions.
- Associates with guests to assist and share information.
- Responds to all guest inquiries, complaints, and comments according to Zoo guest relations procedures.
- Maintains a clean neat appearance and adheres to the Zoo’s uniform dress code.
- Takes responsibility to stay informed about happenings at the Zoo, such as reading employee communications and attending meetings.
- Reflects the qualities outlined in the Guest Relations Statement and the Employee Pledge.
POSITION CRITERIA:
Education and Experience:
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Prior experience in a professional office environment, or with administrative functions.
- Prior experience in customer service or related field, working directly with the public.
- Experience working with a donor/member database a plus
License, Certification, or Preferred Qualifications:
- Some college coursework preferred.
- Prior experience working in a membership department a plus.
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record.

- Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow colleagues, volunteers, and our guests.

- Must maintain confidentiality of work related information and materials pertaining to members.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- Requires the ability to access all areas of the facility.
- Must be able to climb stairs, manipulate computer tools, stand/walk for up to two continuous hours.
- Ability to lift at least 30 pounds in course of normal duties.
- Occasionally involves working out-of-doors in all weather conditions.

- Ability to drive to attend occasional roundtables or community events.
