Job Description
This position will support research in NREL’s Chemistry and Nanoscience Center focused on understanding polymer/membrane degradation in support of the development of electrochemical energy conversion devices. The candidate will work as part of a diverse team to support various projects with academic, industrial, or national laboratory partners. Common job tasks will include efforts such as polymer characterization and/or membrane characterization specifically focused on postmortem analysis.
The candidate will be responsible for performing polymer and/or membrane related research, coordinating with their mentor on experimental design, materials screening, reviewing data and iterating on research focus. The materials of interest will predominantly be ion containing polymers used under aqueous conditions. There are research needs in both the polymer chemistry area as well as membrane fabrication including the possibility of composite and/or bipolar membrane architectures.
The overarching goal for this work is to identify promising polymers and membranes that will provide durable performance under operation in electrochemical energy conversion devices or in separations applications.

Basic Qualifications
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Candidates who have earned a degree may work for a period not to exceed 12 months. Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Preferred Qualifications
An acceptable candidate should have experience with membrane material for electrochemical devices and requisite analysis and characterization methods including but not limited to NMR, impedance analysis, Raman spectroscopy.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Undergraduate II / Annual Salary Range: $34,000 - $54,400
Benefits Summary
Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
