Job Description:
Maryland Environmental Service has an opening in the Technical and Environmental Services Group for an Architectural Historian (classification is Environmental Specialist) to work at the State Highway Administration (SHA) office in Baltimore, MD. Duties involve planning, supervising, and conducting in-house surveys for historic structures, buildings, and bridges as well as managing and reviewing the work of consultant architectural historians for our compliance under federal and state laws and regulations. The Architectural Historian will prepare cultural resources assessments for transportation projects, develop scopes of work for surveys, prepare requests for proposals, review and approve proposals. Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Architectural Historians. Preferred candidates will have experience in Maryland architectural history and transportation agency projects.
Estimated Pay Range:
Environmental Specialist $46,001 - $60,000
Senior Environmental Specialist $50,601 – $65,000
Senior Environmental Specialist II $55,661 - $75,000

Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field (architectural history, historic preservation, or a related field) from an accredited college or university, a valid driver’s license with less than 5 points and;
Environmental Specialist – one year of applicable experience
Senior Environmental Specialist – three years of applicable experience. One year of experience must have included responsibility for managing projects and/or providing leadership to other professional or technical staff.
Senior Environmental Specialist II – four years of applicable experience. One year of experience must have included responsibility managing environmental projects and providing leadership to other professional and technical staff.
Applicants may substitute an applicable advanced education degree for up to two years of experience.
