Student Internship IP2TIS 2024 - Sustainable Materials Database
Program Summary:

As a sustainability and innovation intern, you will work on cutting-edge projects that align with our commitment to environmental responsibility, social impact, and forward-thinking solutions.
You will be working in the Roche Diagnostics Product Sustainability and Compliance (PS&C) team. We partner with the business to drive innovation in environmental sustainability and ensure transparency & effectiveness of product environmental compliance activities using data insights. This will provide you with the experience of working in a cross-functional and international team where inclusion and diversity are highly valued.
Your project will focus on creating a database of next generation sustainable materials to support the development of more sustainable products. The scope of the project includes analyzing the environmental footprint of the most commonly used materials (metals, plastics, etc) in diagnostics and identifying a list of potential sustainable alternatives where appropriate. The work will be executed by conducting extensive literature reviews, supplier interviews and product research, and assessing commercial environmental databases. The final deliverable will be a user-friendly database that supports teams in choosing more sustainable materials during product development. The project will provide a wide overview of materials science and engineering relevant to the medical diagnostics industry.
You will report directly to the Product Sustainability Lead for Diagnostics and will work closely with a team of product stewards and life cycle assessment experts. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across the globe with research and development teams, procurement, and operations. Your work will directly contribute to Roche’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions through the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi).
This internship position is located in PLEASANTON, CA on site / hybrid.
Key Responsibilities
Engage with procurement and R&D teams to understand the current material selection process and top material usage.
Conduct thorough research on material alternatives and assign environmental footprint by reviewing commercial databases, scientific literature or supplier specification sources.
Design an easy-to-use database for an audience of engineers and material scientists
Who You Are:
Required Education (You meet one of the following criteria):
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student)
Must have attained a Master's Degree (within the last 12 months)
Prefer major in the field of Mechanical, Material, Chemical, or Biomedical Engineering
Experience in design for disassembly, design for recyclability, or ecodesign
Interested in applying your knowledge in a modern working environment as part of an internship of at least 3 months and getting to know the medical diagnostics industry.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledgeable in material sciences and/or engineering
Interested in the application of circular economy concepts to product development
Ability to assess complex data and present clear, concise summary
Experience in using database and data visualization tools such as (but not limited to) Excel, Google Sheets, Tableau, and/or Smartsheet.
A proactive team player who contributes to decisions about the project, but who can work independently.

The start date for the internship is July 1st, 2024.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of Californiais $35.00 - $38.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
