The EHS Intern reports directly to the Regional Environmental Manager, but also works with the Director of EHS, Plant Manager, and local Ottawa operations team. The position is given responsibilities that will assist your learning and experience in the mining industry, while following corporate and government regulations and guidelines.
The team member will assist in safety walkthroughs and audits, developing and presenting EHS trainings, and participate in analyses of workplace incidents. They will get to learn facility Environmental & Safety aspects (Policy, Operation Permits, Programs & Procedures), shadow Supervisors and Operators to learn plant operations and equipment, and learn environmental differences in the Midwest Region (Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, and Wisconsin). The EHS Intern will also provide key support on various projects within the Corporate EHS team. Regular projects and deliverables are expected, and the internship is concluded with a capstone project with professional presentation.
This position works approximately 60 percent of the time out in the plant environment with supervision, which consists of temperature extremes, wet weather conditions, and in respirator required areas.
The EHS Intern will work closely with all levels of the plant and corporate organizations and will need to work before internal and external groups. This position requires some travel and a flexible work schedule.
Essential Job Functions:
- Learning environmental regulations and functions in the mining industry
- Be in the plant monitoring, auditing and promptly addressing safety activities/concerns
- Develop a strong and reputable relationship with both hourly and management employees
- Assist, train and educate plant management and employees to develop, maintain, and ensure cooperation and understanding of company and regulatory environmental, safety, and health programs/processes/regulations.
- Industrial Hygiene Sampling (Noise, dust, other)
- Participate in EHS Committees and execute actionable items
- Assist with incidents and enter in IndustrySafe Compliance Management System
- Accompany regulatory agency officials during inspections
- Attend corporate EHS functions and report back to plant leadership
Required Education, Experience, and Skills:
- Minimum of a 2.8 GPA
- Undergraduate student in a relative field, with EHS interests (Environmental, Health, Safety, Geology or equivalent)
- Organization –Pose the ability to handle several different projects or requests with a plan and structure while keeping them as individual requirements
- Communication – Needs to demonstrate good verbal skills and be able to speak to all levels of the plant organization; Ability to write clear and concise reports and documents with logical and understandable language that speaks to the message that the writer is trying to deliver.
- Cooperation – Have the ability to work well with all levels of employees in the organization and be flexible when decisions are made contrary to personal views.
- Problem Analysis & Creativity –Will need to have the ability to provide new and unique approaches to existing or traditional situations.
- Junior or senior-level student
- Currently enrolled in an applicable undergraduate program
- Interest in Environmental, Health, and/or Safety
- Desire to gain experience in the mining environment
