SENIOR CORPORATE ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH & SAFETY (EHS) SPECIALIST
Role Summary
This position is an integral member of the Corporate Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security (EHS&S) Team to continuously improve regulatory compliance, reduce risk and improve viability for Pilot Chemical Company’s operations. This person will support implementation of compliance strategies to ensure the attainment of Pilot Chemical Company’s short and long term EHS improvement goals and current written programs. They will support and foster the Responsible Care® Management System and support employees across the company to embrace our Safety Playbook to live our culture of safety first and achieve our consistent goal of zero injuries.
Key Responsibilities
- This is a Safety-Sensitive position, meaning the employee is directly responsible for his or her own safety or the safety of other people. “Safety-Sensitive” roles include “any job that includes tasks or duties that the employer reasonably believes could affect the safety and health of the employee performing the task or others.”
- Responsible for compiling and tracking all air emissions as well as storm water and wastewater discharge data for all sites as required by any site-specific permit, and reviewing and providing guidance on submissions of all site-specific regulatory documentation to local, state and federal government agencies, not limited to Tier II reporting, TRI reporting, Hazardous waste reports, Site-specific air emission reports, Storm water Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs), Etc.
- Point of Contact for the management and organization of paper and electronic EHS related data, statistics and other pertinent records and provide assistance and training with our EHS software tools, e.g., IIT, CAPA, MOC, contractor/visitor training, etc.. Provide oversight for all Compliance Calendars and OSHA 300 logs at the corporate level.
- Oversee the maintenance and effectiveness of local, state and federal required written plans, not limited to Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan, Benzene monitoring program, etc.
- Draft company wide EHS programs and finalize them after feedback in alignment with Manufacturing that are on time and technically correct to move Pilot towards common programs that are Suitable, Adequate and Effective (SAE). Develop corresponding EHS training and lead or support training for all locations either in-person or via computer-based training system.
- Be part of an internal audit team performing multi-media audits and support timely completion of all corporate internal and external audits, reports, and incident investigations.
- Participate in the Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) to include, but not limited to, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and other safety reviews of processes and projects.
- Assist with investigations of any serious EHS incidents.
- Participate in plant level Facility Safety Committee (FSC), if requested. Support corporate level FSC.
Competencies
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in EHS or another relevant field.
- At least 10 years of professional EHS experience. EHS experience in a chemical manufacturing or industrial environment strongly recommended.
- Strong working knowledge of both EPA and OSHA regulations, with emphasis on environmental regulations and requirements preferred with personal goals to become proficient in all areas.
- Collaborative team player with proven interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to engage with all levels of the organization and present formal and informal training.
- Experience with EHS regulatory compliance including analysis of regulatory impact, development of draft compliance programs, education and training of personnel, auditing and reporting of compliance status.
- Ability to apply regulations to field applicability to recognize compliance, best practices, and/or gaps to the regulations.
- Be task oriented and be able to function with basic guard rails and clear directives to achieve completion of tasks with a high level of accuracy and quality.
- Have a strong personality and be able to lead projects and initiatives.
- Data Analytics experience a plus.
- Travel up to 25% of the time.
- Proficient in personal computer skills and Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Dakota system a plus.
Recommended:
- Advanced course work in EHS, chemistry or engineering with chemical industry experience.
- Experience with continuous improvement activities, i.e., Kaizen, Plan – Do – Check – Act (PDCA), six sigma, etc.
- ISO 9001 and/or Responsible Care® Management Systems (RCMS) experience.
