The University of Iowa Environmental Compliance Specialist will provide professional and technical support for the UI campus-wide environmental compliance program.The person will function as lead in several environmental program areas to maintain compliance with environmental laws and regulations.They will proactively manage environmental programs, create, implement and maintain best practices and procedures.
This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Duties to Include:
- Manage and ensure compliance in several of the following environmental programs:NPDES Wastewater, Stormwater, MS4, GHG reporting, Title V/PAL permit, UST, Floodplain, Wetlands, Water Use, Refrigerants.
- Analyze data to proactively identify compliance risks and develop procedures and best practices to remedy.
- Collaborate with the Utilities Concessionaire to fulfill environmental obligations and ensure compliance in program areas.
- Interface with regulatory agencies to obtain relevant guidance for streamlined implementation of regulatory actions, negotiate terms and conditions to protect the interests of the UI while maintaining full compliance with requirements.

About Environmental Services:
The Environmental Compliance team within UI Utilities provides permitting and compliance services to help the campus meet a range of regulatory requirements. Compliance services are provided in areas such as Air Quality, Spill Prevention, Water Quality, Underground Storage Tanks, Greenhouse Gas Reporting, Refrigerant Management, Storm Water Management, Contaminated Sites, and Flood-Plain coordination. Environmental Services ensures that the University of Iowa is in compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations during and after any construction process on UI property.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in environmental management, science, or engineering discipline or an equivalent combination of related education and experience
- Professional experience (typically 3 years – 5 years) with environmental permitting, modeling and management
- Extensive experience negotiating with regulatory agencies for permit conditions and rule interpretations
- Experience handling complex environmental compliance challenges to identify potential problems and proactively develop solutions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
- Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office applications
Desired Qualifications:
- ·Master’s Degree in environmental management, science, or engineering discipline
- Experience with environmental requirements for power plants
- Experience with Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) requirements
- Experience handling unique environmental compliance challenges faced by universities
- Experience overseeing and directing the work of consultants and contractors
- Demonstrated experience with developing and implementing continuous improvement processes
- Demonstrated experience and ability to utilize tools, techniques and processes for gathering and reporting data
- Demonstrated experience creating and delivering training to varied audiences
