Job Description
The Applied Engineering group within the Energy Security and Resilience Center at NREL is seeking an experienced mechanical engineer to provide technical support for energy efficiency and decarbonization related projects. This position will support or lead projects to assist clients with identifying strategies to support building decarbonization as well as identification of and solution development to overcome building HVAC and thermal comfort related challenges.
Projects will include working directly with industry leaders and federal agency partners on the analysis and identification of cost-effective technical solutions to support commercial building energy efficiency and decarbonization. Work may include running field demonstrations of new HVAC systems, mitigating risks of implementing new technologies, conducting energy audits or building energy modeling, and/or estimating energy and associated cost and emissions savings from innovative decarbonization technologies.
The new team member may conduct and support engineering analysis using software tools to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of renewable energy, energy efficiency, storage, and conventional generation for buildings or campuses. Responsibilities may include performing site assessments, collecting field data, performing engineering studies and calculations. The position requires a skilled professional who applies, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts, and is fully competent in conventional applications of building systems science and engineering.
At either level the candidate will demonstrate leadership in several areas of team, task or project leader responsibilities and demonstrated experience in management of projects. The candidate may lead and/or contribute to the production of materials for technical products, technical reports, documents, presentations, and concept papers, conference papers, journal articles, and shall have the ability to present findings at project technical meetings or conferences. The position will require the team member to balance and complete multiple milestones for a variety of project and/or specific programmatic objectives.
This position can be located in Golden, Co working a hybrid work arrangemenet or may be located outside of the state of Colorado working remote with occasional travel to the Golden campus.

Basic Qualifications
Researcher III-Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Researcher IV- Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience . Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource. Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance. Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE O 472.2A for additional information.
- Experience with building applications / building science and building systems (envelope, HVAC, electrical, and controls)
- Experience with deep energy retrofit projects and building decarbonization and electrification technologies and strategies
- The ability to work independently with minimal guidance and mentorship with a high level of engineering judgment and initiative
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a large dynamic team environment with evolving requirements, schedules, and time constraining milestones towards meeting ambitious goals
- Knowledge of energy efficiency, water efficiency, and/or renewable energy technologies
- Experience with facility master planning and/or facility assessment
- Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g. electrical, mechanical, vehicle, building, etc)
- Experience presenting to clients, partners, and at conferences
- Knowledge of industry applicable policies, trends, and influences
- Proficient with applicable software tools
- Knowledge of Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS) or similar software systems
- Knowledge of Grid-Interactive Efficient Building (GEB) concepts
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer License
- Experience managing clients, subcontractors, or project team members
- Master’s degree in engineering discipline.

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $95,500 - $171,900
