This Archeologist position is part of a team responsible for the rehabilitation of the South Campground at Zion National Park, and will serve as Compliance and Project Archeologist.
This project will rehabilitate several visitor facilities and amenities. Work includes monitoring for the rehabilitation of the South Campground, a historic comfort station, and the Watchman Amphitheater. The South Campground project includes total rehabilitation of roads, utilities, and approximately 128 campsites. Vehicle pads will be repaved, and visitor use areas will be resurfaced and delineated, and site furnishings will be replaced. Three outdated comfort stations will be demolished to allow for their replacement. Work will also address deficiencies in dumpster enclosures and pathways. The campground road system will be partially reconfigured and repaved. Road gates will be installed and the overall site will be restored to improve aesthetics and visitor comfort.
MAJOR DUTIES: The Incumbent serves as an archeologist in the Division of Resources Management and Research at Zion National Park in the Intermountain Region.
To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess one of the following Basic Requirements AND at least one of the following Minimum Qualifications by close of the announcement:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:A. EDUCATION
1. Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:

Six semester hours of related course work in:
Archeological field school.
College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

C. EXPERIENCEFour years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. The climate is generally hot with daytime high temperatures ranging from 95 to 110 degrees in the summer, and 55 to 10 degrees in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 65 degrees in the summer to 10 degrees in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah, located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious, and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, (63 miles), Utah. Elementary school (grades K-5) is available in Springdale, with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Utah Tech University is located in St. George, and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City. Please research and understand your housing options and the area's cost-of-living.
Park/Government housing is not available for this position.
Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework with supervisory approval.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation.
Employer paid and reimbursed relocation expenses are considered taxable income. The NPS does not provide tax, legal or accounting advice. Employees should consult professional tax, legal and accounting advisors regarding concerns about the financial implications of a Permanent Change of Station (PCS).
A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
