Determine material needs from blueprints, sketches, and work requests. Constructs and repairs items constructed of wood consisting of, but not limited to, bookcases, cabinets, shelving, windows, garages, boat interiors, doors, buildings, historic structures, moldings, friezes, fancy trim work and hand-crafted wood shingles. Makes a variety of wood shapes utilizing power shapers to duplicate, replace, or construct items. Sets up and maintains woodshop power tools to a working standard e.g., routers, jointer, planer, shaper, scroll saw, mortise/tenoning tools, and sanders. Constructs a variety of wood items utilizing laminated wood and composition materials in combination with proper adhesives. Finishes constructed items utilizing wood fillers, stains, oils, varnishes to match existing woodwork or wood items. Selects proper wood types for specific projects with attention to proper grade, species and grain. Uses selected material in such a way as to provide the most economical use of materials and produces a finished grade quality of cabinetry.
Performs carpentry assignments involved in new construction and remodeling projects. Works from blueprints, drawings, sketches, and general concepts. New construction includes wood framed and metal buildings, staircases, cabinets, shelves, roofing, doors and windows. Remodeling projects involve removal and installation of materials such as rough frame members, roofing, drywall, flooring, etc. Estimates of quantity, quality, grades, and types of materials utilized in wood frame construction are made to provide the most efficient, cost-effective and attractive finish products with a minimum amount of waste. Special materials such as formica, laminate trims, ceramic tiles, fiberglass, and molded units are utilized to provide quality and longevity to the finished product.
Constructs forms for concrete footings, retaining walls, sidewalks, slabs, flooring, and foundations. Installs slate, tile, brick, and block, as necessary. Mixes mortars and concrete using proper proportions for adequate strength and durability. Places reinforcing wire and rods in horizontal and vertical forms to provide appropriate reinforcing of structural members. Finishes concrete surfaces using power and hand tools. Sets grades, drainage and base course materials prior to placing site-mixed or redi-mixed concrete. Removes wooden and steel forms and finishes concrete surfaces to assure durability.
AREA INFORMATION: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within a beautiful scenic resort area on the shores of Lake Michigan. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, daycare, and recreational opportunities are readily available within a 30-mile radius from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-80 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Shared government housing may be available for rent. If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Physical Demands: Works at benches or while materials are on support which would require standing, stooping, and bending. Also works on ladders and scaffolds requiring overhead reaching and working in awkward positions. Must lift and carry 40 pounds unassisted.
Working Conditions: Exposure to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, saw dust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment.
