Fisheries Intern - Subsistence
|
Position Details:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, Tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the Sitka Ranger District are seeking an intern who will gain a variety of experiences which may include but are not limited to fisheries monitoring at our sockeye salmon weir project, salmon habitat assessment surveys, wildlife surveys, subsistence fish harvesting, processing, and sharing with our tribal partners and youth, and the possibility to attend a Federal Subsistence Regulatory meeting, if the timing lines up with the position start/end dates.
Position Responsibilities will include:
●Operating a remote fish weir to enumerate adult salmon escapement
●Constructing and deconstructing fish weirs in remote locations around Southeast Alaska
●Collecting fish and environmental data using standard scientific methods
●Operating or learning to operate and maintain a remote field camp and small outboard boats.
●Facilitating harvest events for salmon in collaboration with tribal and youth partners
●Participating in the Federal Subsistence Regulatory process
●Living and working at remote field sites for eight or more days at a time with 1-2 other folks
●Rarely, assisting on other Sitka Ranger District projects, which may include wildlife, fish, or habitat surveys, implementing watershed and fish habitat improvement projects, removal of old structures, assisting with kids’ fishing derby and other education outreach programs
Minimum Requirements:

●Emotional intelligence to resolve social and emotional disagreements with field crew members
●Willingness to use a firearm, with training
●Proficiency in swimming

●A strong interest in a career in natural resource conservation science.
●You must be eligible to serve in AmeriCorps State & National Direct Service programs (must not have served more than 4 terms in AmeriCorps).
●You must be available to work a 40-hour week for the 26-week term
●You must be between 18 and 34 years of age.
●You must have received a High School Diploma or GED
●You must be a member of a Federally recognized Indian Tribe, Band, or Village; Alaska Native; or meet one of the following descriptions:
oPersons who possess at least one-half degree Indian blood derived from Tribes Indigenous to the United States.
oDescendants of Members of Federally recognized Indian Tribes, Bands or Communities who were residing on any Indian Reservation on June 1, 1934 – shown by completing BIA Form 4432.

●Housing available in shared rooms at our Forest Service bunkhouse for approximately $250/month

●Two weeks of intensive training will be provided at the beginning of the season, which will include boat passenger training, firearm and bear safety, defensive driving, snorkel training, first aid/CPR, risk assessment, etc.
