Position Overview:
Most of the duties assigned to the GIS Technician are routine, involving database entry, digitizing spatial data, generation of maps, and publishing online layers from this data. The technician does little or no interpretation of data. Outside the main responsibilities of data management and mapping, the technician will also complete work relating to mentoring GIS users on GIS technologies and best practices.
As the GIS Technician, you will be responsible for the creation of digital static maps, web maps, and web layers. You will create and manage spatial data and will work in close collaboration with a team of GIS analysts and developers as well as other teams involved with the prospecting and development of renewable projects. A portion of your responsibilities may include training users how to be efficient in the ArcGIS Enterprise environment, including providing support for use of our custom web applications.
Responsibilities
- Working with a team of GIS professionals to support GIS work requests from various departments
- Creating standard and customized digital maps to support engineering and development efforts
- Producing digital maps depicting project layouts for both technical and public presentations
- Developing new and adapt existing spatial data sources
- Managing and using geospatial data, analyze, process, project, convert, and display geospatial data (both raster and vector) in various formats
- Research and maintain a variety of spatial and associated attribute data
- Support non-GIS users in using GIS Portal and web apps
- Apply established GIS standards, layer files and templates to generate new deliverables
- Database management including data entry
Minimum Qualifications:
- 0-3 years of relevant GIS experience
- Bachelor degree in GIS, Geography, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
- Proficient in Office 365
- Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro
- Knowledge of cartographic standards, principles, and techniques
- Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient in ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise
- Familiarity with QGIS
- Ability to create and implement templates and symbology in GIS desktop applications
- Familiarity with Story Maps, Toolbox, Dashboards
- Understand land legal descriptions, parcel metadata, aerial imagery, DEMs
- Working knowledge of current Esri GIS software and related database systems
- Ability to update and import ArcGIS desktop software settings, customizations, styles
- Ability to implement database and server connections
- Knowledge of GIS analysis techniques, concepts, procedures and project design as it relates to GIS
- Ability to train non-GIS users in using ArcGIS Portal, including creating content and using web applications
- Knowledge and ability to apply cartographic concepts in both hardcopy and web environments for the purpose of clearly communicating geographic information
- Ability to deal with courtesy, tact, diplomacy, and persuasion when dealing with staff members and outside agencies
- Proficiency with cartographic principles, projections, scales, georeferencing
