Major Duties
The Pacific West Region is hiring TEMPORARY Summer seasonal positions for Summer 2026 (up to 1560 hours per service year). Appointment dates are April through October, but vary based on funding, weather, projects, and visitor needs. Within regulatory limitations, the length of initial appointment may be shortened or extended depending on work availability and funding. Duty Locations/Parks: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park - Hawaii Major Duties: Operates and maintains hand and power tools (e.g. mowers, shovels, rakes, lawn edging equipment, blowers, etc.) to maintain buildings, grounds, and roads. Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. Dig ditches, clean gutters, shovel snow. Maintain lawns and grounds. Performs duties such as custodial, maintenance, and groundwork as needed. Transport people or materials in a motor vehicle to and from destinations within the park. Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 - 100 pounds (or more) with assistance. Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
