Job Description
The Grid Automation and Control Group at NREL is seeking a graduate intern to perform electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation and conduct stability analysis of power systems with high-penetration renewables. Unlike conventional SGs, renewables like solar are inverter-based resources and bring new multi-timescale dynamics. Thus, while integrating more renewables, our evolving power systems are faced with various stability challenges at the same time. This group works on developing new technologies that help the current power grid integrate renewable energy.
The intern would leverage EMT simulation and stability analysis techniques to provide solutions for the stable operation of inverter-based power systems. So, the preferred candidate would be passionate about power system modeling, dynamics, and stability. It is expected that the intern could work closely with NREL researchers and deliver high-impact work.

Basic Qualifications
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Candidates who have earned a degree may work for a period not to exceed 12 months. Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled graduate students in power engineering, mechanical engineering, or other relevant areas (Ph.D. students would be preferred).
- Experience in modeling, design, and analysis of inverter-based resources in power systems.
- Experience in PSCAD, EMTP, MATLAB/Simulink, DIgSILENT, or other EMT simulation tools.
- Solid background in power system dynamics and control.
- Being self-motivated, having good problem-solving capability, and respecting project timeline.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Hardware-in-the-loop simulation would be a plus.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Graduate II / Annual Salary Range: $41,600 - $66,600
Benefits Summary
Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
