Summary
The Intermountain Region includes Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, and portions of Montana. The Regional Director oversees around 10.4 million acres including 87 parks, 8 National Heritage Areas, 11 National Historic Trails. The Regional Director manages park superintendents, including three Senior Executive Service (SES) Superintendents, deputy regional directors, associate regional directors, full-time and seasonal staff and volunteers in a variety of disciplines.
Major Duties
The Regional Director is responsible for the oversight of parks, strategy formulation, advocacy for parks, allocation and management of fiscal and human resources, the development and interpretation of policies, as well as the selection and development of park and regional leadership. Responsibilities include: Oversees the planning, development, and management of a wide variety of programs associated with interpretation, education, visitor use and resource protection, development, construction, facility maintenance, land acquisition, and environmental quality. These programs maintain standards in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, history, archaeology, forestry, and other natural sciences. Programs managed not only have a local impact, but they also carry national and international recognition and responsibility. Responsible for the fiscal control of funds, direction of human resources and workforce. Manages the protection of park resources, provides oversight for visitor and community services. Serves as a representative of and counsel to the Director on bureau-wide strategic initiatives and operations. Manages the full range of funds available to parks for operations and specific projects, and a broad spectrum of significant public-partnership projects and programs. Leads a broad and varied external affairs program, including partnerships with not-for-profit organizations. Responsible for the effectiveness of numerous public relations activities, friends groups, park partnerships, and youth programs. The Regional Director provides direction to parks to establish and grow strong partnerships and community relations; and supports park and program public affairs, media, and digital communications strategy and messaging. Directs, identifies, and corrects visitor and job safety. Advises Departmental leadership on Department continuity program and initiatives and is subject to recall for continuity operations.
