POSITION OVERVIEW
Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, the Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 900 animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, and rhinoceros and various other animal encounters.
The Supervisor, Adventure Learning is responsible for providing leadership to the Adventure Guides during operational hours, including safe operations of all attractions, cash handling, communication with team, and assisting Manager with department operations. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing training and continued mentoring to the Guides.
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
- High school diploma.
- Current certification in CPR or First Aid (or ability to obtain certification).
- Minimum of 6 months of relevant experience, including operating a POS system within a sales environment and knowledge of safety practices related to outdoor recreation and/or attraction operations.
PREFERRED/DESIRED:
- College degree in a relevant field of study.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide outstanding customer service to guests by being welcoming, knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic.
- Ensure all Guides are effective in their ability to provide quality learning experiences to Zoo guests by conducting frequent staff training, mentoring, and documentation of team performance.
- Ensure all team members operate attractions in a safe manner while delivering quality customer service and lead team through emergency situations.
- Provide coverage for all attractions across the Zoo as needed.
- Assemble weekly work schedules for team.
- Management of inventory of supplies and relevant equipment.
- Accountable for safe operations of all Zoo attractions, including performing continual safety checks.
- Responsible for the opening and closing of areas within the Department.
- Report concerns directly to Manager or Director.
- Work as an integral part of the Zoo team and communicate effectively with colleagues, management, and other departments.
- As a member of the Conservation Learning team, be able and willing to facilitate programs as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Understanding of how to lead and design environmental and/or science education programs.
- Capability to design and plan new programming and activities that are audience appropriate.
- Ability to deliver programs to large and diverse audiences in multiple settings.
- Familiarity with a variety of conservation and life science topics, including an ability to communicate these complex topics to a variety of ages.
- Proficiency in operating computer software programs, including Microsoft Office suite.
- Interpersonal skills, including working with multiple stakeholders.
- Experience mentoring others.
- Ability to properly handle a variety of animals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
(M) Medium work
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects. Use of arm and leg controls greater than sedentary work in an office setting.
POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:
Outdoor working environment most often with frequent exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity frequently.
Must be willing to work in inclement weather including temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and high humidity. Frequent movement outdoors with some indoor office environment. Exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity frequently.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Must be regularly available on weekends and holidays as necessary.
TRAVEL:
Position requires the ability to operate a Zoo-provided vehicle.
