Summary
The position is located in Shenandoah National Park within the Facilities Management Division. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining historic structures, campgrounds, visitor facilities, and related utilities. Duties involve hands-on maintenance across multiple trades, including carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and grounds work. Work is performed from the Headquarters Area or Big Meadows Maintenance Area at facilities throughout the park.
Major Duties
Performs routine maintenance on park facilities, including minor carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and masonry work, and assists higher-grade maintenance employees as needed. Performs routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities. Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measurements and hand tools, such as replacing broken planks on picnic tables; replacing broken windows using precut stock; and making minor adjustments or replacing hinges, latches and catches. Performs minor painting duties using brushes and rollers according to specific instructions on projects where appearance is not critical, such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. Performs minor plumbing repairs, such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures; replacing faucet washers; and unplugging drains. Cleans, sanitizes, and restocks chemical toilets, public restrooms, and other visitor facilities. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. The selectee will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks and up to 6 months per year based on project needs or weather conditions. Full-time work is guaranteed for at least 6 months per year, but not more than 50 weeks. The expected non-pay/non-duty period is 3 pay periods per service year, typically from December to mid-January.
