The City of Kettering’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts department is currently seeking a Full-Time Supervisor to be responsible for all programming and events for children and adults in the area of Environmental Education. This position also is responsible for the implementation of the Land Lab Program and oversight of the Habitat Environmental Education Center. This position will also serve as the Volunteer Coordinator and Naturalist for the Land Lab project. This position is responsible for the recruitment, selection and oversight of all educational program staff and instructors.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Coordinate environmental programs, classes and events of interest to children from birth to eighteen years of age as well as adults and families;
- Recruit, train and supervise all camp staff and program instructors; secure, supervise and evaluate both hourly and contractual program employees;
- Maintain equipment and supply inventory for environmental programs;
- Develop marketing strategies and promote programs and events through media, i.e., newspapers, fliers, posters, displays, public service announcements and social media and community newsletters.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to take primary responsibility for the entire environmental education program operation. Strong interpersonal skills, experience in working in public sector, and a background in environmental program service delivery desirable. Must possess creativity and an enthusiastic attitude. Must have the ability to work with a variety of school and city administrative staff and personnel. Excellent organizational and staff supervisory skills are required, as well as the ability to work effectively with all employees, City officials and the general public. Experience in budget management and preparation preferred. Excellent communication skills and strong leadership abilities are desirable. If not currently certified in CPR and First Aid, certification will be required after appointment. A baccalaureate degree in Education, preferably Environmental Education, from an accredited college or university with a minimum of four years’ teaching experience or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities desirable.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Responsible for all programming and events for children and adults in the area of Environmental Education. This position also is responsible for the implementation of the Land Lab Program and oversight of the Habitat Environmental Education Center. This position will also serve as the Volunteer Coordinator and Naturalist for the Land Lab project. This position is responsible for the recruitment, selection and oversight of all educational program staff and instructors.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Illustrative Only)
- Coordinates environmental programs, classes and events of interest to children from birth to eighteen years of age as well as adults and families;
- Recruits, trains and supervises all camp staff and program instructors; secures, supervises and evaluates both hourly and contractual program employees;
- Manages all aspects of the environmental education day camp programs including, but not limited to, interviewing and hiring camp leaders and youth recreation aides; supervision and evaluation of all camp leaders; develops employee schedules; implements feasible transportation schedules for field trips; conducts training for camp leaders; develops camp manual for employees; and assists with camp promotion and registration; resolves all patron concerns in regards to environmental camp programs;
- Researches, develops and implements new and innovative environmental education outreach programs on a monthly, quarterly, seasonal and annual basis;
- Coordinates the Land Lab Volunteer Program;
- Maintains equipment and supply inventory for environmental programs;
- Develops marketing strategies and promotes programs and events through media, i.e., newspapers, fliers, posters, displays, public service announcements and social media and community newsletters;
- Responsible for the development of annual budget and year-end program evaluation;
- Develops monthly and program reports and develops, implements and meets goals and objectives;
- Maintains accurate data on planning, implementation, and participation in all youth and family events and programs;
- Cultivates and sustains positive working relationships with parents and staff; handles grievances involving customers and staff; informs Recreation Programs Superintendent of any suggested policy changes, public criticism and complaints or personnel conflicts;
- Regular and predictable on-site attendance required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must have the ability to take primary responsibility for the entire environmental education program operation.
