Role description:
We are seeking a Principal Consultant to support the growth and delivery of our WLC & C services within Sustainability Advisory. This role combines technical leadership in WLC with broader sustainability consultancy responsibilities, including project delivery, bid support, client engagement, mentoring and team development.
The successful candidate will bring strong experience in carbon assessment and reduction across infrastructure and the built environment, with particular expertise in the application of carbon tools. They will help deliver high-quality client outcomes, support business development and work-winning activity, and contribute to the continued growth of our carbon and circularity services.
Role accountabilities:
- Lead and deliver WLC & C commissions across infrastructure and built environment projects, ensuring outputs are robust, proportionate and aligned with client and regulatory requirements.
- Lead and review WLC assessments using OneClick LCA or client led carbon tools, identifying carbon hotspots, testing reduction opportunities and communicating findings clearly to clients and project teams.
- Support wider sustainability delivery across bids and projects, including Sustainability by Design (SbD), workshops, design reviews, reporting and technical advice.
- Work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, designers and sustainability specialists to embed carbon and circularity into project decision-making and design development.
- Build strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor and helping to identify opportunities to grow Arcadis’ support.
- Contribute to proposals, bids and client presentations, supporting work winning and the growth of the SA business.
- Provide technical review and quality assurance for work prepared by others, ensuring consistency, clarity and technical credibility.
- Mentor and support junior team members, helping to build capability in carbon, circularity and broader sustainability delivery.
- Contribute to the development of tools, approaches, thought leadership and service propositions within SA.
- Apply innovative thinking and positively challenge conventional approaches to help clients and project teams deliver lower-carbon, more circular and better-value outcomes.
Qualifications & Experience:

Broader sustainability experience, with the ability to support related topics such as SbD, environmental management, resource efficiency and wider design advisory.

Good knowledge of relevant standards and frameworks, including RICS Whole Life Carbon Assessment Methodology, UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, PAS 2080: 2023 Carbon Management in Infrastructure and the Built Environment, and IEMA EIA Guide to Assessing GHG emissions, BS EN 15978, BREEAMi and associated industry guidance.
