General Purpose of Position:The Sustainability and Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for working with administrators, teachers, non-certificated staff, support staff, parents, and community members to shepherd the district’s vision for environmental sustainability. This position will also require an individual to have a keen understanding of areas related to sustainability education in grade K-12 schools. The successful candidate will have experience in environmental sustainability efforts, best-practices in class lessons related to sustainability and school-wide programs to further enhance our green initiatives, and community engagement such as the tower garden project, composting and the mobile market.
Minimum Requirements of the Position:
- A project management or teaching background preferred but not required
- Possess a passion and knowledge for the development and implementation of sustainability practices in the district
- Demonstrate excellent leadership and organizational skills and the ability to motivate people;
- Demonstrate a good rapport with colleagues, administrators, parents and students
- Demonstrate creativity and a focused vision
- Possess an eagerness to learn and be willing to attend out of district workshops and conference
- Have experience supporting staff members in a variety of ways
- Skills in preparing and maintaining accurate records
- Experience with planning and managing projects
- Proficient computer skills: excel, POS system
- Has good interpersonal communication skills
- Valid Maryland Driver’s license with an excellent driving record. Experience driving a box truck and/or small bus
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds repetitiously.
- High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative and an ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Position:
- Communicate with school staff in regards to tower garden operations, planting, harvesting and curriculum/events
- Tower garden maintenance and stocking
- Institute waste reduction practices in all schools
- Recording/documenting waste reduction for each school and the district
- Train food service composting staff on proper procedures for composting, documenting
- Support academic curriculum in sustainability
- Support school based Green Committees and clubs
- Social media post on green initiatives
- Communications with composting company
- Attend staff meetings/training and other meetings as required.
- Recruiting and training of volunteers
- Supporting and participating with community projects such as but not limited to community events, mobile market
Salary: This is a 12-month contractual position at $24- $28 an hour based on past experience. It will be 27 hours a week.
