POSITION OVERVIEW
The Vice President of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is responsible for leading all environmental, health, safety, and regulatory compliance programs across the company’s wholesale fuel operations, storage terminals, transportation network, convenience stores, and restaurant locations. This role is critical to supporting safe growth while maintaining strong compliance, protecting employees and customers, and ensuring consistent standards across diverse operating environments. The position will build scalable EHS systems, partner closely with operations and serve as a key member of senior management as the company expands through new sites, concepts, and acquisitions. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Leadership
- Develop and execute a company-wide EHS strategy aligned with growth, operational excellence, and brand standards
- Establish scalable EHS policies, procedures, and management systems across wholesale, retail, and restaurant operations
- Serve as a strategic member of the executive leadership team on EHS risk, compliance, and overall safety.
Environmental Compliance & Fuel Operations
- Oversee environmental compliance programs for fuel storage terminals, wholesale distribution facilities, and retail fueling systems
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations related to fuel storage, transfer, spill prevention, air, stormwater, and waste management
- Oversee SPCC plans, permitting, inspections, reporting, and environmental remediation activities
- Manage environmental risk related to new site development, acquisitions, and wholesale customer relationships
Transportation & Fleet Safety
- Direct DOT and hazardous materials compliance for company-operated and contracted transportation fleets
- Partner with logistics and operations teams to improve safe loading, unloading, and fuel delivery practices
- Implement programs to reduce transportation incidents, spills, and injuries
Convenience Store & Restaurant Safety
- Oversee EHS compliance across convenience stores and restaurant locations, including employee safety, customer safety, and facility risk
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, fire codes, local health department requirements, and food safety support programs
- Lead programs addressing top incidents focusing on mitigation
- Support restaurant and retail leadership with audits, training, and corrective action plans
Team Leadership & Growth Enablement
- Build a safety culture built on continuous improvement
- Build, lead, and scale a high-performing EHS team capable of supporting rapid growth and multi-brand operations
- Develop EHS KPIs, dashboards, and executive reporting
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Support M&A activity, including environmental and safety due diligence and post-acquisition integration
Risk Management
- Develop and implement enterprise risk management strategies aligned with company objectives.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate operational, financial, and regulatory risks.
- Oversee incident investigation processes and implement preventative risk controls.
- Manage claims administration including workers’ compensation, general liability, and auto liability.
- Coordinate legal, HR and Operations teams on risk-related matters.
- Analyze loss trends and implement programs to reduce claim frequency and severity.
- Maintain relationships with external brokers, insurers, and risk consultants.
Captive Insurance Program
- Oversee the potential move to a Captive Insurance program.
- Manage the strategy and performance of the identified program through broker communications and offsite Captive meetings.
Leadership & Reporting
- Lead and mentor safety and risk management teams across the organization.
- Provide regular reporting to executive leadership on safety performance and risk exposure.
- Develop annual safety and risk management budgets and strategic plans.
- Represent the company in industry safety initiatives and regulatory engagements.
Key Objectives
- Reduce incident rates and overall claim costs.
- Strengthen proactive risk mitigation practices.
- Maximize the financial and strategic value of the insurance program.
- Ensure a consistent, company-wide commitment to safety excellence.
QualificationsQualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Safety, Engineering, or related field
- 10+ years of progressive EHS leadership experience in fuel distribution, retail, food service, or multi-site operations
- Risk management experience supporting captive insurance programs and collaborating with risk management and claims teams
- Strong working knowledge of environmental, occupational safety, transportation, and retail/restaurant regulatory requirements
- Proven ability to lead EHS programs across geographically dispersed locations
- Demonstrated success operating in a high-growth, fast-paced environment
Preferred
- Advanced degree in Environmental Management, Engineering, or Business
- Professional certifications (CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent)
- Experience supporting convenience store chains and restaurant brands
- Background integrating EHS programs during acquisitions or rapid expansion
- Working experience with Captive insurance models
Travel
- Regular travel to wholesale facilities, terminals, convenience stores, and restaurant locations (25–50%)
