The Missoula County Health Department is seeking an ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SUPERVISOR to join their team. This position manages and leads the Licensed Establishment program for the Environmental Health Division of Missoula Public Health and inspects licensed establishments to protect and support the health of people, environments and communities.

Representative Examples of Work
Provides supervision, direction and leadership for the Licensed Establishment Program. Responsible for staff hiring, termination, training, professional development, and performance reviews. Assigns work and tracks performance of the team and employees. Meets regularly with staff to set priorities, foster a productive and cooperative work environment, share team progress toward goals and to provide feedback and other information. Assists with rule interpretation and problem-solving. Develops relevant policies and procedures with input from staff. Creates and implements individualized training plans for new staff. Evaluates and implements staff safety measures. Inspects food service, daycares, pools and spas, public lodging and other establishments or public facilities for compliance with state and local regulations. Oversees and performs plan review. Investigates complaints and food and waterborne outbreaks. Teaches or oversees food safety classes. Joins staff on field visits to evaluate work and to help resolve difficult issues. Represents environmental health and serves as a liaison to elected officials and the public including the business community, civic organizations, school groups, media, and state, federal and local government agencies. Prepares and presents information to the Board. Coordinates administrative and judicial enforcement activities; drafts and proposes enforcement policies and procedures; monitors enforcement activities and helps resolve cases. Evaluates cost of services; monitors revenues and expenses; and manages contracts related to programs. Participates on the Health Department management team. Engages in strategic and emergency planning, quality improvement, performance management, workforce development, and accreditation documentation and activities. Serves as part of incident command during emergencies. Participates in department-wide strategic activities. Advocates for programs, regulations and policies that protect public and environmental health. OTHER DUTIES: Performs related work as required or directed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a bachelor’s degree. Degrees best suited to this position are microbiology, environmental health, environmental sciences, or degrees in the biological or physical sciences. Requires a minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter credit hours in physical and biological sciences, including at least one successfully completed course in chemistry and biology.
- Requires 2 years of professional experience in environmental health or related fields. Requires one year of experience in leadership or direct staff supervision.
- SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires registration as a Sanitarian in Training or Sanitarian with the state of Montana within one month of hiring. Requires a valid Montana driver's license.
- New employees will be asked to volunteer vaccination status and communicable disease testing for required vaccines upon hire and will be offered assistance during hiring to receive necessary immunizations. Employees who have not received the vaccines required for their positions or who are unwilling to voluntarily provide vaccination status for required vaccines will receive a reasonable accommodation where such accommodation does not require an undue hardship or endanger the health or safety of any person.
Physical/Environmental Demands
Requires some physical exertion, bending, climbing, above average agility and dexterity. Requires lifting 10 pounds frequently; moving up to 50 pounds occasionally. Requires use of appropriate protective clothing and gear. Requires some evening and weekend work, and travel to work sites and meetings.
