Our Environmental Division is looking for a Production Underwriter to join our team. Great American’s culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in‑office days are Tuesday–Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs. We are open to candidates in the following offices, NYC, Boston, MA, Exton PA, or Cincinnati OH.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
- Has responsibility for risk selection/rejection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability per divisional objectives for renewal and new business opportunities.
- Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
- Maintains a high level of customer service.
- Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer.
- Prices business in accordance with company guidelines.
- Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiates appropriate loss prevention actions.
- Reviews submission documents including Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and other environmental reports, consults online resources and liaises with in-house risk control and other colleagues to support underwriting decisions.
- Works with legal department to manuscript policy language.
- Negotiates with brokers on pricing and coverage.
- Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
- Visits agents, brokers, and producers nationwide in order to retain existing accounts, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new relationships in support of divisional objectives.
- Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
- Develops creative solutions for new opportunities.
- Attends and participates in Division events, broker appreciation events, industry conferences.
- Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
- Actively participates in daily collaboration meetings, shares knowledge and experience with others and provides guidance and assistance to lower level associates.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Business or other related discipline.
- Generally, 1-3 years of related environmental underwriting experience. Open to candidates with an environmental consulting or other environmentally-focused backgrounds as well.
- Preference for candidates located near our offices in Boston, New York, Exton and Cincinnati (this is a hybrid role).
- Willingness to travel nationally for work-related events and marketing (15-20%).
- The ideal candidate is a self-motivated team player, able to multi-task in a fast paced environment and remain detail-oriented.
