Position Overview
The Environmental Monitoring Officer will support ESS in the implementation of environmental monitoring programs for a mining project in Ivory Coast. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with national regulations and international environmental standards, including those of the International Finance Corporation.
The position involves field-based monitoring, data collection, reporting, and supporting the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Monitoring
- Conduct routine environmental monitoring (water quality, air quality, noise, soil, biodiversity).
- Collect and record environmental data in line with approved monitoring plans.
- Ensure proper use, calibration, and maintenance of monitoring equipment.
ESMP Implementation & Compliance
- Support implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP).
- Monitor compliance with Ivorian environmental regulations and project environmental commitments.
- Identify non-compliance issues and support corrective actions.
Site Inspections & Contractor Management
- Conduct regular environmental inspections across the mine site.
- Monitor contractor compliance with environmental requirements.
- Report environmental risks, incidents, and non-compliance.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly environmental monitoring reports.
- Maintain accurate environmental databases and documentation.
- Support reporting to clients, regulators, and lenders.
Incident Management
- Assist in the investigation of environmental incidents (e.g., spills, contamination).
- Support implementation of corrective and preventive measures.
Stakeholder & Internal Coordination
- Support environmental awareness and training for site personnel.
- Liaise with HSE teams, contractors, and operations staff.
- Assist during environmental audits and inspections.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in:
- Environmental Science
- Environmental Management
- Environmental Engineering
- Natural Resources Management or related field
Experience
- 3–5 years of experience in environmental monitoring, preferably in mining or construction projects.
- Experience with ESMP implementation and environmental fieldwork.
Skills
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring techniques and equipment
- Understanding of environmental regulations in Ivory Coast
- Familiarity with international standards (e.g., International Finance Corporation)
- Strong data collection, analysis, and reporting skills
- Ability to work in remote, site-based environments
