Join the Air Permits Division, where Environmental Chemical Specialists play a key role in issuing the permits that protect and maintain the air quality of the state. We’re looking for self-starters who will use sound scientific judgment and attention to detail to review applications and submittals from the manufacturing industry. In this position, you will work with a team of Air Permit Writers to build your own knowledge base and ensure permitting actions are consistent with local, state and federal regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in an engineering field; OR
A master's degree in an engineering field or a chemical or physical science field.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
- Draft permitting actions and accept assignments as assigned from supervisor or other member of supervisory chain of command, following instructions as provided and asking questions when needed to clarify information.
- Build knowledge of new and existing state/federal regulations applied in air permits, and avoid technical, regulatory, grammatical and spelling errors in work product.
- Complete TEMPO and EDMS tasks accurately, completely, timely and in accordance with current guidance.
- Effectively organize workload to ensure assignments are completed timely and maintain accurate records and data related to progress, justifiable revisions and completed projects.
- Communicate efficiently and effectively with supervisory chain, coworkers and external stakeholders, ensuring written communications are clear and concise.
Position-Specific Details:Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment, job appointment (a temporary appointment not to exceed four years), or promotion of permanent classified employee. If the position is filled as a job appointment, it could be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available.
Domicile: Baton Rouge
Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Environmental Chemical Specialist 1, 2, 3 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.
Compensation: This position offers a Special Entrance Rate (SER) listed below. This is the minimum compensation that may be offered. The job title and salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
- Environmental Chemical Specialist 1: $26.44 per hour
- Environmental Chemical Specialist 2: $28.29 per hour
- Environmental Chemical Specialist 3: $30.27 per hour
