Hours: Wednesday - Sunday (flexibility to work daytime, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight hours)
Pay Rate: $16.41/hour
This is a regular part-time position working up to an average of 24 hours per week annually in an ongoing capacity. Work schedules may vary week to week, month to month, or seasonally based on operational needs.
Summary:
The Lead Campout Leader at Omaha’s Zoo & Aquarium is a part-time role that supports day-to-day logistics of the overnight programs at the Zoo and Wildlife Safari Park, such as scheduling overnight programs, communicating with customers, preparing and organizing paperwork, managing supplies, and supporting Campout Leaders during programs, among other duties. This position reports to the Overnight and Scout Education Program Coordinator.
The Lead plays a key role in advancing the mission, goals, and values of the Omaha Zoological Society by ensuring high-quality, memorable visitor experiences.
Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Coordinate food and supply purchases for the Zoo and Wildlife Safari Park.
- Maintain inventory of merchandise and supplies.
- Assist in the development of hands-on activities and materials for overnight programs.
- Maintain the African Safari tent camp site and assist as needed with the Wildlife Safari Park camp site.
- Assist with tent setup and takedown, as well as tent repairs throughout the year.
- Maintain and manage campout program records.
- Organize materials required for evening campout programs.
- Provide additional support for overnight programs during evening hours as needed.
- Lead programming and provide interpretation during overnight programs as needed.
- Communicate effectively with program participants, supervisors, and overnight security staff.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Preferred bachelor’s in education, environmental education, environmental studies, fisheries and wildlife, biology, or related field.
- Experience delivering outdoor or informal education programs preferred.
- Ability to engage diverse audiences across a wide range of ages and backgrounds.
- Strong customer service skills, including experience with guest relations and conflict resolution.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
- Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Working Environment and Physical Effort:
- The schedule for this position follows the seasonal campout schedule and may shift during busy and off-season periods. Sunday mornings are required, and afternoon/evening availability is also required.
- On occasion, the employee must be able to travel between two work locations: Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium and the Wildlife Safari Park in Ashland, Nebraska.
- Ability to walk extended distances throughout the Zoo and Wildlife Safari Park in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach overhead, and climb as required to perform job duties.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, and move up to 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, using safe and proper lifting techniques.
