Summary
This position is located in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid if the selectee lives outside of the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with the Federal Travel Regulation.
Major Duties
This position is assigned to the Visitor and Resource Protection branch of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which is the 5th most visited unit of the National Park Service. Visitation at Lake Mead exceeds 7.5 million people annually, and recreational activities in Lake Mead include hiking, camping, boating, fishing, diving, waterskiing, and much more. Lake Mead has an incident volume that exceeds 12,000 recorded dispatch events each year. Summer high temperatures average 108° F, while winter highs average 60° F. The incumbent serves as a commissioned law enforcement officer responsible for enforcing laws and conducting complex investigations including fatality and missing persons. This position serves as the Branch Chief of Emergency Services overseeing Search and Rescue (SAR), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR), Incident Management and Structure Fire operations. The Park maintains a paramedic level EMS program. Search and Rescue operations include ground, aircraft, and marine response including Park dive team with submersible robot capabilities. Major Duties: Oversee and manage All Hazard Program operations (i.e. ICS, emergency medical services, search & rescue, preventative search & rescue) Develop and implement multiple, complex emergency planning and policy making for All Hazard Program Employee supervision (i.e. performance planning/appraisals, employee recognition, employee development and counseling, etc.) Conduct and supervise the detection of criminal activity, investigation of criminal violations, and custodial arrests Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under FERS, an employee must: 1) transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position, AND 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary rigorous position including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld, AND 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause).
