GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
Perform entry level professional duties of moderate difficulty providing the opportunity for professional training in various offices throughout the City. Perform assigned duties to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures and standards required for successful performance. Specific activities vary by department. Work is performed under direct supervision.
This internship is located at the Glendale Wastewater Treatment Plant at 1825 Glendale Street in Lakeland, FL. Interns will work a maximum of 30 hours a week. This internship begins in late May.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Sample and analyze water, wastewater, and related substances for BOD, nutrients, metals, and microanalysis
- Gain knowledge of basic chemistry and biology principles
- Gain knowledge of laboratory safety regulations
- Work with computerized equipment
- Provide professional support such as tracking and charting citywide performance measures; developing tracking methods and gathering performance data.
- Perform self-reading as assigned, correcting errors as they are found.
- Conduct special studies in conjunction with a project, analyzes data and makes recommendations based upon studies.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)
Enrollment as a Senior in an accredited college or university in a major relating to Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Engineering, or Microbiology

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Skill in the use of personal computers and standard office equipment
- Knowledge of common laboratory safety measures
- Knowledge of standard laboratory principles, terminology, materials, and equipment
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites
- Keyboarding skills
- Ability to promptly and effectively complete tasks
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other City employees and the general public
- Skill in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing, and to request clarification when needed
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:
- Requires sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis, routine keyboard operations
- The job risks exposure to no significant environmental hazards
- The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing and speaking
