This position is located in El Malpais National Monument, in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division.
Major Duties
This position oversees law enforcement operations at both El Malpais National Monument and El Morro National Monument, ensuring visitor and resources safety across these two parks. This position will supervise two (2) GS-11 Park Rangers, seasonal rangers as well as non-commissioned staff and NPS volunteers. The position will conduct and supervise the detection of criminal activity, investigation of criminal violations and custodial arrests. The position will prepare and execute warrants, interview witnesses and detail suspects. This position will ensure the completion of comprehensive written reports. The position will conduct and/or supervise the gathering of law enforcement security and intelligence information relating to the park, it's facilities, events, mission or visitors. In addition, this position is critical to the overall management and direction of these parks and serves as a critical role on the parks management team. The position helps to develop strategic plans, is involved in critical decision making and actively working with peers, partners and constituents. AREA INFORMATION: All other rocks in America combined do not hold as much history as the cuesta that dominated the 1,200 acres of New Mexico's El Morro National Monument. Rising 200 feet above the valley floor this massive sandstone bluff with its reliable waterhole hidden at its base welcomed weary travelers and the human history inscribed upon the rock and preserved in the ancient ruins, makes El Morro National Monument a handbook of cultural history of the Southwest. At an elevation of 7,219 feet, temperatures range from 90+ degrees in summer to below zero in winter. El Malpais National Monument consists of 114,748 acres of lava fields, cinder cones, lava tubes, ice caves, sculptured sandstone formations, and ponderosa, pinon and juniper forests. Approximately 85% of the park (97,000 acres) is managed as wilderness. Elevation ranges from 6,600 to 8,372 feet, and temperatures range from 90+ degrees in summer to winter extreme lows of below zero. The administrative headquarters is located in the town of Grants, New Mexico (pop.10,000) within Cibola County (pop. 25-27,000), and all services are available in the local community including the New Mexico State University-Grants Branch and the Cibola General Hospital. Albuquerque, New Mexico is located 75 miles to the east on I-40, while Gallup, New Mexico is situated 65 miles west along I-40 or the 602 from the El Morro area. This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under FERS, an employee must: 1) transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position, AND 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary rigorous position including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld, AND 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause).
