Summary
This position is in Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation Cultural Division of the Resource Science and Stewardship Directorate. The purpose of the position is to serve as a Historian for one or more parks. Not to Exceed: 1039 Hours. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation (OCLP) is May to November but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: 5/03/2026
Major Duties
As a Historian you will perform the following duties: Serve as part of a team responsible for completing cultural landscape and historic structure inventories for the Cultural Resource Information System (CRIS). Conduct research to document the historical evolution of cultural landscapes and historic structures, along with condition, prescribed treatment and management decisions, and other information pertinent to park resource management. Participate in site visits, research trips to archives, libraries and other repositories of information. Prepare historic preservation documentation, compliance, and background materials in support of Section 106 and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Physical Demands: The work is sedentary, but at times requires travel to repositories of information, and may require visits to remote sites which require walking or riding over rough, uneven surfaces. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time. Working Conditions: Most work is performed in offices, archives, and libraries. Assignments may entail work with dusty records or objects.
