Summary
The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. The duties described by this position may not fully meet the type of work to be performed or there may be work that this position does not do in each of the specialties; however, if the general intent is met then this position is appropriate.
Major Duties
This is an open continuous announcement. Applicants will be referred throughout the announcement period. Final application disposition will be completed once all positions are filled or announcement reaches the closing date. The first cut-off date is 11:59 pm (EST), December 22, 2025. Major Duties: Performs recurring building-maintenance and repair work in the trades of carpentry, painting, roofing, plumbing, masonry, cement finishing, and basic electrical utility repair. Work supports both historic and non-historic structures and includes the repair, replacement, construction, and installation of building components and fixtures. Constructs, installs, repairs, and replaces doors, windows, trim, siding, shelves, cabinets, steps, framing elements, and similar structural and finish components. Measures, cuts, fits, assembles, and secures materials using appropriate hand and power tools while following accepted trade practices and preservation requirements. Prepares, repairs, and paints interior and exterior building surfaces including wood, metal, masonry, and plaster components. Mixes paints and coatings, performs surface preparation such as sanding, scraping, priming, and cleaning, and ensures proper application and cleanup in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines. Performs plumbing maintenance including replacing faucets, valves, traps, hose bibs, unions, nipples, and related fixtures; repairing minor leaks; clearing clogged drains; assisting with seasonal winterization; and digging or backfilling shallow trenches as needed to support utility lines or drainage components. Performs basic electrical maintenance such as replacing lamps, light fixtures, switches, receptacles, and fuses, and completing simple wiring repairs that involve removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, or insulating defective wiring or components. Ensures all work is consistent with safety procedures but does not perform journeyman-level troubleshooting or system installation. Reads and interprets work orders, sketches, basic blueprints, and technical instructions to determine materials, layout, and proper methods for completing assigned tasks. Plans work independently, selects tools and materials, and ensures work meets established standards. Uses and maintains hand tools, power tools, ladders, scaffolding, and related equipment safely. Works in all weather conditions, on rooftops, in confined spaces, or in awkward positions while lifting and carrying materials up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
