We seek a proven environment and sustainability leader to drive environmental excellence across a major UK infrastructure programme. The role manages environmental strategy, compliance, and performance, working closely with clients and partners. It also offers opportunities to support work winning and advance Mace’s wider responsible business ambitions.
Please Note\: This role is based in London with some travel to Peterborough.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Managing the environmental strategy, approach and governance structure across the programme, ensuring alignment with regulatory expectations and the client’s strategic ambitions.
- Overseeing and assuring the full EIA programme, including technical leadership, quality control, and cross‑discipline integration.
- Directing programme‑wide environmental design interface, ensuring environmental requirements are embedded at all project stages and trade-offs are transparently managed.
- Providing senior leadership for DCO environmental documentation, examinations, legal compliance frameworks, and expert evidence.
- Building and managing relationships with senior stakeholders including regulators, statutory consultees, environmental NGOs, and government bodies.
- Managing, developing, and growing the environmental team, setting capability expectations, resourcing plans, and career development pathways.
- Supporting work winning through bid support, innovation, client liaison, upskilling of colleagues and external profile-raising of Mace/Mace services.
- Supporting the drive for Mace to be a leader in climate change and sustainability.
You’ll need to have:
- Significant leadership experience in environmental management for major capital programmes, with a track record delivering DCOs or other nationally significant planning processes.
- Deep knowledge of UK environmental legislation, EIA regulations, natural capital and water environment policy, and best practice infrastructure consenting.
- Proven ability to influence and challenge multi‑disciplinary design teams at senior levels to achieve environmental outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience representing complex environmental matters to executive-level stakeholders and regulators.
- Strong leadership capabilities with experience building and developing high-performing environmental teams.
- Chartered environmental professional (CEnv) or equivalent, with extensive industry credibility.
