Crusoe's mission is to accelerate the abundance of energy and intelligence. We’re crafting the engine that powers a world where people can create ambitiously with AI — without sacrificing scale, speed, or sustainability.
Be a part of the AI revolution with sustainable technology at Crusoe. Here, you'll drive meaningful innovation, make a tangible impact, and join a team that’s setting the pace for responsible, transformative cloud infrastructure.
About the Role:
The Senior Director of Commissioning & Controls will lead the strategy, execution, and
governance of the commissioning program and Building Management System (BMS)/Controls
architecture across Crusoe’s hyperscale data center portfolio. This leader ensures all mechanical,
electrical, and controls systems perform reliably, safely, and efficiently from design through
operations. This role is central to Crusoe’s rapid hyperscale development program and is
responsible for delivering consistent, concurrently maintainable, Tier III+ facilities that support
AI/HPC workloads at industry-leading PUE and uptime performance.
What You'll Be Working On:
1. Commissioning Program Leadership (Cx / ICx)
- Own the end-to-end commissioning strategy for all Crusoe data center sites (400 MW
hyperscale campuses).
- Develop and enforce Crusoe’s Commissioning Standards, documentation, test scripts, and
functional performance tests for all MEP/controls assets.
- Lead Integrated Systems Testing (IST) and coordinate with design, construction, vendors, and
operations stakeholders.
- Drive “startup readiness” for new sites, ensuring clear deliverables, redlines, turnover
packages, O&M material, and lessons learned.
- Oversee third-party commissioning agents, ensuring alignment with Crusoe standards, safety,
reliability, and concurrency requirements.
- Enforce quality control for critical systems: medium voltage, UPS, battery, generators,
switchgear, mechanical plants, CRAH/CRAC, pumps, valves, SCADA/BMS, and emerging AI
cooling technologies.
2. Controls & Automation Leadership (BMS/EPMS/SCADA)
- Own Crusoe’s global Controls architecture: BMS, EPMS, SCADA, PLC-based sequences, and site-level monitoring systems.
- Define and maintain standards for sequences of operation (SOO), alarming, redundancy,
failover logic, and trending.
- Partner with Engineering to design future-ready, scalable, secure controls systems for 400 MW campuses.
- Ensure cyber-security, segmentation, and VLAN strategy for controls networks.
- Standardize controls vendors, protocols, and integration approach across all campuses.
- Build governance for change control across all facility controls programming and logic
modifications.
3. Pre-Construction, Design & Engineering Support
- Review and influence design packages for controls, MEP systems, sensors, integration, and
redundancy.
- Validate controls sequences for Tier III+ concurrent maintainability and safe failover behavior.
- Collaborate with Engineering on equipment selection, system modeling, and performance
optimization for AI/HPC cooling loads.
4. Operational Readiness & Turnover to Facilities
- Lead facility activation: hot testing, staff training, documentation transfer, and reliability
validation.
- Ensure that all commissioning artifacts feed into Operations, Maintenance, Asset
Management, and CMMS platforms.
- Develop operational playbooks, SOPs/MOPs for controls changes, and emergency response
procedures.
5. Continuous Improvement, QA/QC, and Reliability
- Build a structured quality assurance and controls audit program for all operating sites.
- Investigate failures, alarms, and system anomalies to drive root cause analysis (RCA).
- Benchmark controls and commissioning design performance to refine Crusoe’s standards.
- Lead lessons-learned programs, feeding back into design, vendors, and construction partners.
6. Leadership, Team Development & Vendor Management
- Build and lead a specialized team of commissioning managers, controls engineers, and
integration specialists.
- Manage vendor performance for commissioning agents, BMS integrators, EPS/EPMS
integrators, and OEM control teams.
- Represent commissioning and controls functions at key internal forums, executive reviews,
and technical governance boards.
What You'll Bring to the Team:
- 10+ years experience in data center commissioning, controls engineering, or mission-critical
facility operations.
- Strong background with BMS, EPMS, SCADA, PLC logic, and MEP systems.
- Demonstrated experience leading commissioning programs for hyperscale/large-scale
campuses (>50 MW preferred).
- Deep fluency in Tier III/Tier III+ design principles, redundancy strategies, and failover logic.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to drive multiple simultaneous sites.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams across engineering, construction, vendors, and
operations.
Bonus Points
- Experience with high-density/AI cooling technologies.
- PE license, PMP, or CxA certification.
- Experience developing enterprise controls standards across multiple geographies.
- Previous experience in a fast-growth, startup or scale-up environment.
