The Michigan Milk Producers Association is a dairy farmer owned cooperative and dairy processor. Founded in 1916, the MMPA serves dairy farmers in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
MMPA maintains a strong presence within the dairy industry with strategic business relationships through a variety of channels like processing shelf-stable, value added dairy products. MMPA has five member owned processing plants in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, including Superior Dairy and the Middlebury Cheese Company. Products made at MMPA’s plants include fluid milk, cheese, ultrafiltered milk, cottage cheese, ice cream, butter, nonfat dry milk, cream and condensed skim milk.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager is responsible for overseeing health, safety, and environmental programs across six manufacturing plants. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
The HSE Manager supervises four HSE team members and partners with plant leadership to develop, implement, and continuously improve safety and environmental programs. Strong organizational skills are essential to manage multiple facilities, regulatory requirements, reporting deadlines, and training initiatives effectively.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety & Program Management
- Develop and implement safety programs, policies, and procedures across all plant locations.
- Design and conduct safety training programs to ensure employee awareness and compliance.
- Investigate all accidents and near misses and prepare detailed reports of findings, including recommendations to prevent recurrence; implement and track corrective actions.
- Conduct safety audits, inspections, and job hazard analyses.
- Monitor safety performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain organized and accurate compliance documentation for all six facilities.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Supervise and support four HSE team members.
- Provide guidance and coaching to plant managers and supervisors regarding safety expectations and accountability.
- Partner with operations and HR to reinforce a culture of safety and compliance.
- Partner with state workplace safety and health agencies
Organization & Continuous Improvement
- Manage multiple plant priorities and regulatory deadlines effectively.
- Standardize HSE processes and documentation across facilities.
- Support emergency preparedness planning and response coordination.
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Safety, & Environmental Engineering/Science or related field
- Minimum of 5 years of related experience
- Approximately 5 years of HSE experience in manufacturing, food processing, or industrial environments.
- Experience supporting multiple facilities preferred.
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and environmental regulations.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple locations and competing priorities.
- Detail-oriented with strong documentation and follow-through capabilities.
- Effective communication and training delivery skills.
- Ability to travel regularly between plant locations.
- Ability to work in manufacturing environments and wear required PPE.
