The City of Louisville is now accepting applications for our 2025 Environmental Compliance Internship!
Under supervision of the Environmental Compliance Manager, the Intern performs entry level work in environmental services through inspection, education and assistance in the enforcement of regulations and the operation and minor maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility. Work involves on-the-job training in the duties of municipal environmental compliance with the intent of increasing familiarization with the operations, terminology, and requirements of this career. The supervisor will provide training, coaching, and instruction about procedures and standards to be followed. Feedback will be provided during the six-month internship to note progress.
The internship may run for up to six months, between May 18 and November 6.

Examples of Duties
- Participates in an on the job training program involving practical, "hands-on" experience with the various compliance programs: Industrial Pre-Treatment, Backflow/Cross Connection Control and Stormwater.
- Performs inspections on a regular basis in areas such as food establishments, municipal water and sewage systems, industrial facilities, and others as required.
- Assist with Stormwater Public Education and Outreach, Public Participation and Involvement, Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination, Construction Site Stormwater Runoff Control, Post-Construction Stormwater Management, and Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping for Municipal Operations.
- Data entry in support of all compliance programs, with focus on the Backflow and Cross Connection Control databases and tracking software.
- Inspects various types of existing pretreatment systems; inspects and approves newly installed pretreatment system; implements a Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Abatement Program requiring installation, maintenance, and/or upgrading and retrofitting of various types of gravity interceptor systems.
- Other duties as assigned.
General Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Prefer currently enrolled college student or recent graduate with course work in mathematics, biology, chemistry, or engineering.
Additional Information
Special License, Registration, or Certificate Required:
All candidates must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Colorado Driver License in good standing with no major violations in the past 3 years.
Physical Requirements of the Job:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, fingers, handle, or feel tools or controls; read, speak and hear; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to climb up and down steep ladders and stairs.
Work Environment:
The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate but on occasion can be loud. The employee is required to climb stairs to reach the top of, and climb down into wastewater storage tanks/vaults while performing their job.
