The Village of Elk Grove is seeking a Sustainability and Communications Intern to assist with the implementation of the Village’s Sustainability Action Plan, as well as support overall communications efforts for the Village Manager’s Office. This internship is an opportunity to learn about sustainability at the local level and about local administration as a profession. The Sustainability and Communications Intern will work under the supervision of the Senior Management Analyst in the Village Manager’s Office.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead recycling contamination cart tagging pilot program, which will include data collection, analysis, and reporting on findings.
- Prepare and publish educational materials such as graphics, social media posts, posters, newsletter articles, etc. to promote proper recycling and other sustainable actions.
- Develop a sustainability webpage to centralize information and resources for the public.
- Coordinate applications and ensure eligibility for various designation programs such as SolSmart, Monarch Watch, etc.
- Assist with implementation of other Sustainability Action Plan items.
- Assist with weekly and monthly Village publications under the direction of the Senior Management Analyst.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Perform administrative and project support tasks as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Working toward an undergraduate degree in environmental science, sustainability, public administration, or related field.
- Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional setting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Must be able to lift, carry or otherwise move up to thirty (30) pounds regularly.
- Leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Illinois Driver's License with a safe driving record.
PROGRAM DATES: Tuesday, May 26, 2026 – Friday, August 14, 2026
Some flexibility with start and end dates may be available if necessary to align with school term dates.
HOURS OF WORK:
- Primarily Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm with a 1-hour lunch (37.5 hours per week).
- During four weeks of cart tagging data collection, hours will likely be adjusted with an earlier start time for two days per week.
PAY RATE: $17.50 per hour

Additional Benefits: Summer Seasonal employees will accrue one (1) hour of paid leave for every forty (40) hours worked.
