Job Title: Energy Store (ES) Battery Lead
Location: Concord, NCCompany: GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU)
Drive the Future of Formula 1 with GM PPU!
We’re seeking a visionary ES Battery Lead to join our ERS (Energy Recovery System) Team in Concord, NC. In this critical leadership role, you’ll spearhead the design, integration, and optimization of the Energy Store (ES) battery system, focusing on safety, performance, light weight, structural integrity, thermal management, and electrical reliability under extreme racing conditions.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams in cell chemistry, power electronics, thermal management, and manufacturing to optimize ES packaging and performance within the hybrid powertrain while adhering to FIA technical regulations. Lead prototype validation, testing programs, and continuous improvements to deliver race-winning battery solutions essential for championship success.
Key Responsibilities
Establish technical requirements, performance targets, and development goals for ES battery components, including cell retention, thermal interfaces, structural enclosures, and high-voltage interconnects.
Lead cross-disciplinary teams—cell chemistry, thermal, controls, mechanical design, and manufacturing—to integrate and optimize the ES within the hybrid powertrain, ensuring maximum performance, deployment efficiency, and race reliability.
Oversee prototype development, dynamometer testing programs, and data-driven iterations (vibration, thermal, charge/discharge), guiding engineering functions to achieve validated, race-ready solutions.
Direct design reviews, FMEA processes, documentation, and compliance with FIA F1 regulations on ES capacity, weight, recharge rates, and safety interfaces.
Foster innovation by driving research into next-gen materials (e.g., advanced composites, electrolytes), manufacturing advances, and DFM/DFA principles to enable scalable, high-quality battery production.
Qualifications
Bachelor's in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering (or related) with 8+ years in battery systems, high-performance hybrids, or motorsport ERS; Master's/PhD with 5+ years preferred.
Expertise in CAD (NX preferred), CAE/FEA, and PLM (Teamcenter) for battery enclosures and thermal-structural simulations.
Proven experience with battery thermal management, cell integration, HV safety, vibration isolation, and FIA F1 power unit regs.
Desirable Skills
Hands-on motorsport prototyping, lab testing, and trackside support.
Knowledge of advanced battery chemistries and materials, additive manufacturing, and ML/DoE for optimization.
GD&T standards, quality systems, and cross-functional leadership in fast-paced environments.
